Just Got a New/Old hero as gift... vs? 1.5+

Again just had a chance to kinda skim over it, I was reading while driving the whole way to work this morning, (i'm in the car for about 1 hour 45 minutes on the way to work) and it's amazing, the only thing, it's geared towards the eris, and although I know that some people are getting it to work on the hero, I wonder is there any forum EXACTLY like that, only for the cricket hero not eris, I'm searching myself, but having trouble using the search features and i've been trying to register, but there's one of those TERRIBLE "captcha" thingies except this one you have to put a picture together, and it says the picture is good and put together but when i click register it says i didn't get it right. BUT THAT'S ANOTHER ISSUE altogether haha. anyways if you know of that i would greatly appreciate it, i'm trying to find it myself also.

one more thing, has anyone had any experience with damagecontrol rom? or the fresh toast? i'm looking for a daily driver. those are the ones recomended for cricket hero's that are going to be flashed for talk/text/web/mms ...so i wanted to see if any one had experience with either? I'm leaning towards damagecontrol because of what i heard about it's a good daily driver. please advise

Good grief... Been out of touch week or two... got hit by a car out walking in one of our storms... can you believe it? Frikkin guy yelled out he "didn't see me" as he slid away.
Anyway, up to date... took my 1.5 up to 2.1
Now I'm rootin to GB... etc...
I'm guessing nothing new regarding the root process... I picked up a cheap ($10) 4 gig class 4 sandisk micro.. I'm not too into movies...
Just wanted to thank all of you for the "up to now." I'll report when finished.

Thanks... glancing blow really.. busted his mirror with my right arm.. which i'm happy about.. but in retrospect, 4 inches closer and I might be "healthy for eternity!"

Hey, quick ques... not a big one... since i don't care about anything much on the current sdcard (like 1 gig, got it as a throwaway) I should just scoop out the little sucker, put in the new one, and then root.. right? I mean vs. root it as is, and then change cards. Stoopid ques. right?
 
Stocky - It is always good to Keep a Backup.
If your New Card Shoots Craps...you can put your old one in....

I would Root - Make a Nandroid - then Copy files from old to new SD card.
 
Sorry to hear about the accident, Stocky. I hope you were not too bruised up. ;)

Additionally, +1 with what MahaloCat said. You can also backup your Nandroids to your PC, so if your microSD card ever gets corrupted, you have a safety net. :)

Do I have to partition my new SD card ?? I have a nagging suspicion.. swear I saw it somewhere ??? duh

No, you do not. Partitioning was used more for the pre Android 2.2+ days when Apps2SD was not native.

One can still partition for certain things like moving cache to the microSD card, but that is entirely optional and you should not have to worry about that. I hope that helps.
 
and my upgrade from 1.5 to 2.1 gave me a build number
that ended in .6 instead of .5

So someone just said that can be a prob ??? what tha...

Remember once you use the Z4Root and click on the root process, if after 5 minutes you still see no activity and your are still stuck one one of the screens, simply take the battery out, and re insert and boot back up, then check your apps to see if you have the SuperUser app in the drawer, if you do then you are rooted
 
I looked around a LOT.. then said... what the heck...

I downloaded thru the phone, Astro...
Then 4Shared...
From 4shared grabbed Z4...
Then for laughs rebooted...
Then ran Z4... went Perm...
It sat for 5 or more minutes.
I shut it off... (didn't bother with battery)
Turned it back on...
And Voila... A Super User is me.!

Obviously thanks to allllll big time.

Anyway... I started dropping in apps... well a few. Guess that was stupid..
I should first "get on GB" ??? Or should I first put the New 4 gig sdcard in??
I know... "4 gigs.. what are you cheep!!!" no.. Radio Slack was local and for $12 right there I grabbed it. Besides, I'm not video intense at all.
You did say get on the Gingerbread wagon... right? This is gonna be cool... another reason besides radio and bushcraft for me to use to stay away from the human population... she's gonna kill me some day... I swear it.
 
That was not the permission,that was the flashing process I think you were referring too and yes that is normal

I want to load up Gingy...
I want to install larger sdcard...
I already have astro, and ROM-mgr.... don't know why i mention that;
but now I ?need? Titanium (which seems popular around here)... but is MyBackupRoot better or worse? Do I need one of them... which please.. opinions or "other"... and is Nandroid from within "one" of them?

1.. Card switch 1st ??
2.. apps or app I should use for what now???

First thing you do is put the GB Rom on your SD card, then make sure you have the latest Gapps that goes with it, once you have both on the root of your SD card, then you will turn your phone off, then you will boot into recovery ( Volume down button and end key at the same time, then hold for 2 seconds, then when prompted hit the home key to get into recovery. Once into recovery then you will create a Nandroid backup. Once you have your nandroid back up, then you will do a full wipe

Wipe data/Factory Reset
Wipe cache partition
Advance/Wipe Davlik cache
Partitions Menu/Format Boot
Partition Menu/Format System
Partition Menu/Format data
Partition Menu/Format Cache

Once you have done this,then you will install zip from SD card and install the new GB Rom, once done then Install the Gapps

Then reboot your phone and set her up

I like mybackup root better than titanium backup. I've had bad luck with titanium backup latrly. Its not restoring all my app data sometime. What I like about mybackup root is that it saves your apks and data on your sd, and reinstalling all the apks and app data is a one click process.
 
Don, thnx for time in that.
Tomorrow... I mean ... in a couple of hours it could be an interesting day.
Once I get in there I'll feel a lot better.
I'm dying to get rid of all that crap... Splint, etc...

Reminds me of cleaning out registries filled with Symantic/Norton spit they engineered all of us not worthy of acting on ourselves. Somewhere between violated and scary... like washDC.
