Issue with Screen on Galaxy tab 10.1

Hi Guys,

I've had my tab for a few days now and I've noticed that when I'm holding it, if I grip the bottom left hand side the right side of the screen 'bleeds' a darker colour and the clock and notification bar pop up.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm assuming its a fault and plan to send it back but wondered if anyone else had the same problem

Thanks

What you are seeing is normal. You are opening the the cloc, date, settings, etc. shortcut. The bleeding is just a fade effect. Tap on the clock and you will see what i mean, then tap anywhere else and the clock will minimize and the effect go away

but surely the clock/date settings shouldn't pop up just cause I'm holding the opposite side of the screen??

I also find that when the keyboard is up, if I hold the same bottom left side of the tablet, the keyboard toggles between number/characters (the right hand side '123' button is highlighted as if I had touched it)

Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean. When you hold the tab by the bottom left corner, is your finger or palm accidentally touching the clock?
If so, this is what is accessing the shortcut.

It sounds to me that you touching these shortcuts (same with "123" button) which is why the tab is presenting these areas.
NO sarcasm intended at all but it is a huge touch screen and will respond to what you touch.

I'm touching the very LEFT hand edge of the screen/tablet but the clock is on the far RIGHT of the screen. unless there is a hidden shortcut that I am unaware of, the clock is menat to pop up when you click on the time shown in the right hand bottom corner

LOL :) You are so right. I obviously don't know my left from right.
I'm sorry and the other appear correct that you do have a defective unit

I think there are some production (hopefully not design!) issues with some of these tablets related to the touch panel.

Mine *loses* any idea that the screen is being pressed some places in the lower left quadrant of the screen if I apply just slightly too much pressure.

I noticed this in "Pew Pew" but wasn't sure if it was perhaps just a software bug, then I noticed it again in JetCarStuntsLight in that my rocket boost (left on screen button) would shut right off if I pressed just a little too hard.

It does not seem to happen if the tablet is resting on a flat surface (or harder to consistently reproduce for sure), but only if I am holding it with lower corners resting on my lower part of my palms, fingers behind, pressing with my thumbs.

It isn't nearly as obvious, but I can tell just using the samsung keyboard if this problem exists or not : with the Sammy keyboard, if you hold a key , you should get a pop-up of options (often just capital version of the letter), and this always works for letters on the rightmost side of the keyboard (like, press/hold "l" and see "L" pop up). This works no matter how hard (within reason...I'm not a brute and have had dozens of multitouch devices so don't break the glass and blame me!) I press for letters like "L".

It varies a little based upon whether I am pressing my fingers on the back or not, but in general, I can easily reproduce the "press too hard and don't get the pop-up" problem on letters like "s" and "d" ("a" only happens if I am pressing somewhat with my fingers on the back ). I can actually see the problem on w,e,r,t,y,u, even i and occasionally o and p...

The problem can also be seen with the Android (US) keyboard... here there aren't as many pop-ups (like no caps option if held longer) but the "tell" is whether the key stays illuminated blue as you hold down and press harder or loses the fact that you are pressing it and goes black. With light pressure holding "s" on the Android keyboard, I get the German "

Best Buy store demo Galaxy Tab 10.1 has the same issue as mine did, so I returned it and suspect most units have a similar problem. Maybe some people could live with it, but I'm not willing to always keep it on a flat surface when playing games like Pew Pew or Jet Car Stunts Lite, so I returned mine but I'll consider getting another one if I hear much about a redesign.

Note that this problem happens when in default (landscape, power button on top) orientation, and games like Pew Pew and Jet Car Stunts only operate in this mode so their lower left controls have problems. If they would allow 180 degree rotation like the keyboard, the problems would likely go away but they don't..

I have the same issue with a failing touch screen. If I press a bit harder than normal on the screen the touch input completely fails and I have to let go and wait a second before touching again. I first noticed it on several free games.

I don’t think it happens on only a portion of the screen. I found a way to test it...Get "Multitouch Visible Test" from market. Each finger that touches the screen shows as a circle in a different color. Touch and apply a bit of pressure just about anywhere on the screen while moving around and the circles all disappear indicating no touch input.

To be more specific and give an idea of how hard I was pressing I placed the tablet on a scale and zero’ed it out so that it would only measure how hard I push down. With one finger going in a circular motion along the edges it failed 1.5 lb.

I really hope this is only happening to a select few because I Fu##ing love this thing!!! I will be exchanging until I find one that work properly.

My unit is the same but I cant imagine ever pressing so hard on the screen in any situation other than reproducing this reaction on purpose.

This is a none-issue. You're not supposed to be pressing so hard on the screen.
