Root Huzzah! 2.1 on my newly-rooted Hero

First off, major thanks to Just2sexy for the excellent rooting guide! Good stuff mate :D

After reading the news that the official 2.1 update had been pushed back yet again to June, my patience finally failed and I decided to root my Hero this afternoon. With a little help from the forum and using Just2sexy's guide, it was fairly straightforward (though I did manage to install a 1.5 ROM first ... lol).

Really pleased with it so far, using ROM Villain 5.2, and I'm starting to re-install my apps.

To celebrate, I drove home using turn-by-turn Google Navigation (with voice) .. and when I got home I was presented with Streetview!

SIMPLY OUTSTANDING! :D:D:D

Can't believe I left it so long to root.

Wooh. So many people have completed the process in the past 24 hours. crazy!
Time to have a Rooting and Rom party I think haha.

glad you got it working my friend. Nothing like having a nice fact rom and installing all those great apps we have (especially 2.1 games and apps)..

wooh.

I think the combination of the official update pushed back to June coupled with turn-by-turn Navigation going live in the UK yesterday has pushed many over the edge. It did with me :D

It doesn't hurt that your guide is straightforward either ;)

When I first started trying to root and install a custom rom (boy, feels like years ago now lol:p )

I was really confused. There were so many guides with conflicting instructions. There were no clear cut guides.

So I tried and tried, failed, tried again lol.. got there in the end and decided to make a guide that anyone can try and succeed with.

Good to see it working & in action. Was thinking about making a youtube video.. but we shall see

Yeah, I'm heading that way myself. BUT, do I just go ahead and "root and custom rom" now, or do I wait for my 16GB sdcard to arrive and do it all in one hit (taking advantage of apps2sd in the process)?

Apps2sd will automatically occur when the phone is restarted and there is a memory card inserted.

So when you get your new card, just use titanium backup to backup the apps and restore them on your new sd. will take less than 5-10mins. :o

I just switched to Sprint with an HTC Hero from AT&T With an iPhone after 1 year (I have crap credit, so I was afraid I needed a deposit with sprint to get service.. turns out I didn't!). Anyway, as an added bonus I got the phone for $49.99 with my contract. I've had it for 4 days now and I made the decision to root it and load the Fresh 2.0d Rom w/ Android 2.1. I also did the root switch apps to SD. I then installed the upgrade for the Google Nexus One live wallpapers, which coincidentally Google shot me an e-mail congratulating me on activating my phone. I'm not sure if it is the ROM, or Android 2.1, or both.. but the phone is a totally different machine. The stock HTC 1.5 OS is not too bad, but the UI is noticeably more "jerky", it hesitates at first when entering a menu and trying to scroll immediately. I have ADHD and I'm an IT Professional, and avid Linux Fan / Server Admin / Developer, so I tend to beat the hell out of an OS. The iPhone OS you can tell was developed specifically for what it does. I was happy with my new Hero's versatility at first with 1.5, but when I upgraded to 2.1 last night I immediately forgot what an iPhone was.

Anyway, just to add my "Root" story that tons have added recently.

Hey great story. Hero is awesome! Android is the best!

just a heads up this is the GSM Hero forum

The Sprint / US Hero general forum is here

The Sprint / US Hero rooting forum is here

After 5 hours and 2 sd card (its hard to own a 3uk hero) i'm finally a happpy rooted individual. Job well done to this guide. Never thought i could root it.

lol I hear ya. I hated 3 when I had an 18 month contract with them. I never got any signal lol.

Glad to hear your rooted :)

Go and enjoy all the great apps that need roto access now. wooh

Yeah, I took the plunge after hearing about the update being pushed back to June...

Really impressed with Villain 5.2, its easily as fast as the most recent stock and dare I say it, Modaco 3.2?!

Cant wait to see what 5.3 is like!

I use Villain 5.2 too. Brilliant ROM, and such a massive step up from the previous 3.4 version (though I know its from a different build). I'm also looking forward to 5.3, brilliant, brilliant work.

JITstands for “just in time” compilation, and allows software to run faster by “compiling bytecode into native machine code at runtime which substantially increases performance”

Any amount is considered a donation and yes it is money donate not code donate...
