thanks for responding.

so i did a ton of shit, short of a factory reset.

i had a bunch of apps disabled... enabled them all, that didn't work.
uninstalled a few apps i had recently installed... that didn't work.

toyed with virtually every checkbox.. think i may have found something:

under developer options, do you have the "don't keep activities" checked or unchecked? i had it checked. when i uncheck it, i can't reproduce the problem. if i go back and check it again, i can reproduce it, as well as uncheck it again, and the problem goes away.

can you let me know if yours is checked or not? and if you're willing to try, check the box, and then try and reproduce my steps? if you uncheck it, it does seem to go away again.

i have always had that button checked, ever since i got the phone, because i felt like it was saving cpu, battery, etc.. by killing unneeded app threads. so i know this is a new bug from 4.1.1
