Help 1st android encounter, plz help

Hello all

To be clear-this is my first encouter with andriod world. i have been always worked with iphone so never thought of change but recently i have been given a gift "lg optimus p990" from my younger brother and i really dont know much about android thing. i have seen few articles here in this forum about upgrading my phone software. at present it has Android OS, v2.2 (Froyo), upgradable to v2.3 but im confused where to start. i tried looking for videos but no success. please can anyone guide bit step by step. few things i would like to know it unlocked and i was wondering if i do the upgrade will it be locked back as things happen with iphone????

no it wont go back to locked after updating.

theres a few things to do before you can put 2.3.4 gingerbread on the P990 2X

if you mean by installing a custom rom (cyangenmod) then you have to root (sort of like jailbreaking)

Thanks for you help, i really appriciate it. Sorry to bother u again. by all means im getting pace on to understand bits n pieces about andriod. but still can u please guide little more if you can-
i saw the video u put a link onto was very informative. wats gud? gingerbread or cynomangen ??? what should i go for???

Gingerbread as we know is an OS update for particular phones such as Samsung galaxy s2 or even the optimus 2x (although still waiting)

Cyangenmod is a custom rom for many phones out there. What it does is flash froyo (2.2) and gingerbread (2.3) to phones that will never receive an update. They also add there own little functions aswell, there latest one out for the optimus 2x is 2.3.7 gingerbread. They are working on cyangenmod 9 which is 4.0 ice cream sandwich.
