Using a sense rom for the first time in a while (mikfroyo) and notice everytime I send an SMS the phone drops 3g and goes to 1x, sends, then goes back to 3g. Is this normal?

I've never seen that while using a sense ROM before but is common on AOSP ROM's.....I wouldn't assume anything is wrong though.

It's normal. The Evo doesn't have the 1x emblem built in it just always displays 3g even if you aren't getting 3g speeds, since it isn't built in to the stock ROM it never really makes it into any custom Sense ROMs. I guess Mik decided to add it in or he ported it over from another device that has it built in.

so why can't sms use 3g though?
I think 3g is strictly for 'data'. While texts are data, they were included in phones (2g) before 'data (3g)' was (from my understanding, I had an instructor this semester that went way into cell phone history...)

here's a wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_wireless_data_standards

Basically, when a call (or text message) is received, the phone switches to 1x because 3g is not used for 'phone' functions.

(at least that's what I got out of it.)

It also seems that 4g is a bit of a misnomer when used to describe wimax, as wimax seems to be more of the next version of wifi.

(also what I got from it, very interesting stuff there)

short answer: phone and SMS are designed to work on 1x only.

You could also ask why voice can't operate on 3G. Old protocol; it works.
