Android (4.1.2) eMail Cache

I'm trying to keep my wife's Galaxy Note 8.0 clean and fast so I've been snooping in the "My files" directory. I noticed that there's nothing in the email cache lately. There has been tons of stuff in there in the past that I've cleared via the applications manager but lately it's been empty. What's up? What's supposed to be in there? I know how to clear it but now I'm afraid I've done something wrong to it.

Please enlighten (educate) me on the function of this cache folder.
