Android laptop vs Chromebook vs "big" laptop

I am about to replace my antiquated XP desktop with some type of laptop, which will primarily be for document management, and will need to connect directly to a printer and scanner. I am hearing Chromebook and Android can use scanners through SANE, and I assume printing through CUPS (or a similar utility. I also know Windows and Linux can do dang near whatever they want. Would Chromebook and Android be able to handle printers and scanners plugged directly into a built in USB root hub built in, or would they be too limiting?
