Another battery life thread (idle drain?)

eerie

Newbie
So I recently finally got rid of my iPhone 5c and got the note 5. Everything about it seemed appealing to me, but I'm having trouble with the battery life. During the day I text my bf occasionally at work, and not a lot else goes on. (I check cats on nekoatsume but that only takes a minute)

I go from fully charged to sometimes low 70% in about 8 hours. Is this normal just from texting? I'll post a screenshot of the battery use after work today.
My other main concern is this idle drain. I went to sleep at 99% and woke up at about 92.
I took two screenshots (attached) when I got up.

I feel like that's a ton of battery drain for an idle phone.
My iPhone was awful and definitely had a worse battery, but it would only idle drain MAYBE 1-2 percent a night. I shouldn't have to turn on power saving mode everyone I sleep out of fear my phone won't have battery to wake me up the next day lol.
I adore the note 5 a lot, and maybe this idle drain is normal, but I would really love some insight. I read a lot of "the note 5 should last the whole day on one full charge" but I just don't see it.

Thanks in advance.

Your app usage is taking a huge chunk of our battery. As far as your radios go, if you live or work somewhere that has a weaker signal then its going to use a little more battery than normal.

It seems like a loton of it is the system? I'll post a screenshot after work when I get home but here is what it looks like now.

My phone signal during my work night doesn't change too much I don't think, but I definitely get more service there than at my house.

I took a long screenshot of the system stats since it's using the most battery, but I'm not sure how to post it lol.
Thank you for the response!

WELCOME TO ANDROID FORUMS eerie ! :thumbsupdroid:
You don't have a problem, you have plenty of battery left in both scenarios.
You're getting hung-up on % use per line item.
Well, something has to be at the top of that list & in both sets of screenshots,it's not as if you've used a whole lot of battery juice.

If the phone has some charge on it when you get home at the end of the day, that's typical use.

Enjoy your phone & forget about the stats unless you're left high & dry with 0% battery mid-day.

Thank you!! Glad to be here :D

And good, that's a relief then. I'll try really hard to not pay so much attention to that and assume that being home around 75% or so is typical.

Do you have any suggestion about the idle drain issue though? I still feel like that is kind of a lot.
boyfriend has a new android as well (though is was an unlocked phone, he has a sony xperia z5 premium i believe) and i know the battery is bigger, but i don't think that would be causing my phone to be losing 10% of idle drain at night and his only 1-2%, you know?

I'm just worried that one night i'll forget to charge it and it'll be dead even in idle ;(

i also realize... does using chrome and other apps really drain that much? I notice on my screenshots from 10:55 till about 12:30, i pretty much was only using chrome. seems it went from 92 to 74 battery. is that normal? Seems like a ton D:

Yeah,it seems Samsung has some work to do on the idle energy use.
I've noticed it as well overnight,at home,on a good signal/data connection.
It could be better & you're correct,it does fare not so well compared to other devices.
My guess is this will be taken care of when the phone is updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow,as one of the key improvements for all devices is the behavior while idling/not-in-use.

Web browsers in general are resource hogs, not just in our phones but our computers and laptops too, so that's not out of the ordinary at all. There's a lot of system resources that get sucked up just in viewing a typical web site these days. Years back web pages were pretty static, there was a bunch of text and maybe a handful of photo images. Now sites are full of not just text but text that contextually varies when you press on it, images that get pulled in from multiple servers in various locations, along with lots and lots of crappy little animated ads. So your web browser is working pretty hard sometimes.

Ah thank you for the response :)
OK that makes sense and I'm a little less worried about that then haha. I'm so used to how things look that I don't realize how much stuff was loading on the page. Appreciate your time!

Oh this was nice to read, I can't wait for the update and I'm happy to see that Google is putting their foot down a little more with apps and developers being more transparent about how much battery things are using. Excite! Thank you for the responses and the link! Appreciate the help and info ; u ;

Ok so screenshot of battery after today, bit of texting, little app use. Left house at 100% battery.

I actually have a super large bag and carry both a little external battery and my charger with me (just in case) i just prefer to not have to do that if need be rofl. I was just more worried about it being something i was doing or an app draining my battery oddly fast or something.

when in use its still MUCH better longevity compared to my iphone 5c (that thing was basically garbage), but i'm still being bothered by the idle drain.
lost another 10% last night.

i still don't get it either.
boyfriend has an android, though his is unlocked, but his idle drain is only like 1-3%. is it cuz mine is a stock phone so i had all the extra samsung and bloatware running in the back?
I JUST got the phone recently so i'm not really willing to root it. at least not yet. (doesn't that remove the warranty, similar to jailbreaking iphones?)

Yeah, Samsung loves to load up their products with their own blend of custom bloat. Their hardware is quite good, their added cruft not so much.
Rooting could give your phone carrier or the place where you bought it from an excuse to exempt you from the protection of a warranty but not always. It's kind of a d*ck move as rooting is a software thing, if some component on your phone craps out on you that's a hardware thing. But it varies a lot because some companies are pretty lenient and will honor their contractual obligation with you whether you've rooted your phone or not, while some make things more complicated with fabricated 'legalese' so they can charge you to fix something you would otherwise get for free.

Both Samsung devices I own only drop 1 to 3 percent overnight.

What's your typical use of it, if you don't mind me asking? Do you have certain things disabled? That's the kind of idle drain I would like lol
I don't use either anymore to be honest. Before, my prevail lte was my everyday driver. I used it for everything. I never had it drop more than 3% at night.

Thank you for the reply! Maybe I'll call them and ask about it just to be sure. If they are OK with it, I'll probably wait for Marshmallow to come out and see where it's at, and go from there.

I wanted to make another post real quick.
unfortunately i didn't take a screenshot due to pure rage... but i'm getting at my wits end. i absolutely love this phone, but the battery is driving me up a wall.

i'd say it'd be due to 'crappy radio service' or how i have bad signal, but how is my boyfriend going to have the exact same signal as me, or my iphone 5c going to have the same type of service, and both his phone and my awful 5c both only have about 1-2% idle drain still?
the radio service is not effecting my idle drain that heavily.

When i checked earlier today i had, in about ... 3? 4? hours, and it was drained like 15% when i wasn't using it.

I disabled samsung push service yesterday.
is this effecting something??
i'm getting so frustrated. i'm almost worried that the battery is faulty or something but the tmobile app and the samsung+ app and note 5's own app all say the battery is fine.

how can i be sure?
i have no idea what else to do. should i re-enable the samsung push?

Get Package Disabler Pro from the Google Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro
Disable (DO NOT DELETE) all of the T-Mobile apps, unless you use VVM/etc......
Disable (DO NOT DELETE) any of the apps that have the "Smart" preceding them, they're garbage apps & run in the background, constantly.
Disable (DO NOT DELETE) the Cheetah Mobile app.
Disable (DO NOT DELETE) any of the Samsung apps that you don't use.
Don't go overboard with disabling the Google apps, but, many of them can be disabled if you're not using them (Google +/Hangouts/Play Books/Play Music/Drive/Sheets)
Leave Google Play Services intact,as well as Google Services Framework.
This should help a lot in getting the idle battery drain under control.

Thank you for this.

I went ahead and gave my phone one more fresh start, downloaded the stuff i needed/wanted, and got this and greenify as well. set this up and disabled what you said (except smart select, as i use the s-pen to select stuff quite often and i don't want that to be messed up at all, not sure if smart select effects that at all?)

i didn't disable samsung push this time. not sure if i should. i was thinking about trying out samsung pay, but we'll see i guess.

i'll set up greenify as well, let the battery discharge, and see what GSam says tonight about my idle discharge.

thank you again, hopefully this gets rid of my frustrations :(

The smart select is OK,I was referring more towards the Smart Cleaning & the related B.S.
Those apps are part of the problem with the battery life.
The other half,I believe,is the aggressive memory management used by this phone.
I don't have my Note5 in my possession ATM,but, when I had it,I was running a custom ROM that dealt with this better than Samsung.
But,that's another topic of discussion altogether.

So i definitely have some tweaking to do, but i notice a vast improvement.
i went from 10+% idle drain overnight to about 5% overnight.
i'm going to go through and check what bf's phone doesn't have that my phone has on his running apps list and see what else i can disable, but this has helped a lot. thank you again ; ;

I just got my Note5 back this evening.
Lemme know if you have any more ?'s regarding what is OK to disable/etc.................
