App Downloading and OS Optios

Just bought my first Android phone...HTC Desire and I am loving both the phone and the OS. Having come from a superb Nokia 5800 I am having a few "cultural" issues. Now, I know some of these are dumb questions but bear with me.

Firstly my phone is a brand new unlocked T-Mobile phone and I would love to get Android 2.2 but I am unsure if it counts as T-Mobile or a sim free phone and I know that affects when I will get the OS upgrade. Is it correct that I will just have to wait ? Is there anyway to "force" an OS download ?

Also I am not sure how to download an install apps. Rather than use air time can I do it when my phone is connected to my WiFi at home and therefore not incur charges ? Does the phone automatically use WiFi rather than mobile network ?

Earlier this evening a message appeared telling me that there was an update for Google maps...no idea where its gone now...can't find it in notifications. It was a few meg so I didn't want it to use my phone network provider but use WifI. Any ideas where I can regenerate it or find it ?

Does anyone know if the actual maps for Google Maps can be downloaded yet to the phone ? Ovi Maps was superb and I could navigate without being online.

Any tips appreciated

1. If you have not received the notification to download android 2.2 i would assume your phone is tmobile branded and you will have to wait till september i believe.

There is a way to "debrand" your phone but it is a bit complicated, just head over to the Desire board there are a few threads there on how to debrand your phone.

2.Yes you can use wifi to download apps,if you have turned on it will use the best connection automatically which would obviously be your wifi.

3.Just go into the market app then press the "downloads" tab and there you will see the update for google maps, just click on it and press install.

Thanks for your reply. I was hoping that as I unlocked my phone straight away I would get the update but now realise I have only unlocked it from the Network...not the branding.

I have downloaded the app install application and have successfully download an app to my PC copied it across and then ram install on phone to get it running.

Of course WiFi is the same and less steps. I'm loving this phone already.

I'll have a look at unbranding but wouldn't want to try anything that may "brick" the phone
