Bizarre Problem...Boots to black but allows Restore

JIMV

My beloved Droid Razor HD developed a weird problem...It worked fine Friday night when I turned it off and booted to black Saturday afternoon when I turned it on. The phone is NOT rooted nor have I attempted to root the thing.

On boot I get a black screen that says "phone locked error 0" amongst some other gibberish. If I do the 'restore' fingerwork the phone boots to the normal droid screen and all works fine but I cannot seem to get the thing to stop the black screen on boot.

The phone was fully charged when I noted the problem. Could this be some form of a virus? (I use Lookout) I had not been searching from the phone for weeks.

My carrier is Verizon and my android version is 4.1.2....

I plan to visit the Verizon shop later today to see if they can fix the evil thing. Any ideas to save me the trip would be appreciated.

Did you do a major system update in the past like ICS to JB?

you are now on JB. Did you try running in Safe Mode (disabling all apps you added without uninstalling them). If the problem goes away it is caused by an app you added.

I updated to Jelly Bean months ago. I have not loaded a new app in over a week

Di you do a Factory Data Reset after updating to Jelly Bean?

Did you try Safe Mode?

It tales hours, days, weeks, months for some of this foolishness to surface.

I booted into safe mode last night from the black screen with no effect on my phone. Was I supposed to do something else?

Just for info, I did the factory reset and everything went back to factory settings EXCEPT it still booted to the black screen. Verizon said they had never seen this before and offered to replace the phone with a nice new 'refurbished' one. I demurred and changed carrier to T-Mobile and phone to a Galaxy S4...I have it back to looking and acting much as I had the old phone. Two comments, I do not like Android v 4.2 as much as I did 4.1 AND the sound on music from the Galaxy's internal DAC is noticeably better than the Motorola device. Thanks for everyone's help on this.
