Root [Boost Mobile] Developing A New Rom - Warped Paradox

Hi all. I have just finally broke down and now have the time and tools necessary to build a custom ROM for the Warp. I would appreciate suggestions on theme's, kernels, typical problems with developing ROM's for the Warp. I am using this tutorial here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801690

Let me know if that is the best tutorial to run from and any "tweaks" that should be added. Again, thanks for any and all help and support in advance.

It helps to read the change logs of other roms threads, for suggestions, but more importantly you gotta pick a good base to work with. I personally think a theme should go with the name of the rom, imo

Which base ROM would you suggest? That is exactly where I am in the development right now.

Kernels, most devs here use Alien Kernel, it includes a flashlight fix and over clock up to 1.8 GHz, and problems... dependencies in files are pain in the butt. Mess one file up and any other that has a dependency on it will mostly likely mess up too. Sometimes the littlest changes can cause things to break in other places.

Some people prefer a barebones B10 base now, since thats the latest and by using that as a base you'll avoid users seeing the update notification you'd get on a B08c based rom, for example. With a devs permission, you can also use one of their roms as a base or even an older version of one of their roms. Then you can remove/add the tweaks that you want from there, its easier that way. I can't really suggest one, because you and I most likely have different "tastes" for roms. For example, one may pick one rom because of appearance features (Like my rom, Halo Jelly, which is heavily JB themed), whereas someone else may go for total absolute unholy speed and performance (like Warp OEM, which is purely performance), and another may just want stability (Like DroidSmith, you just can't make that rom crash no matter how hard you try...)

Find a rom that you like, and work your way from there, if you're going to use someone elses as a base, but ask for permission first to avoid problems with others.

This will be my first "ROM" development. I went to College for computer programming so I have that going for me. I just have been holding back, taking notes, and waiting for the right time to do this. I believe I am where I need to be, with some help of course, and hope to make this one of the best ROM's for the Warp.

We have some of the sharpest Devs and Themers you'll find anywhere.I'm not either But I know these guys won't hesitate to help.;)

I couldn't find it right now but somewhere on the warp forum there is the tweak nation rom base. DroidSmith was already underway when I had seen it or I may have used it. If I remember correctly it was b10 based with quickpanel and swipe to clear already included

Ok and thanks guys. How about this question........should I start with a kernel (Alien) for the mandatory files in Kitchen such as meta, system, and boot.img then borrow from the B10 based ROM as needed or start with the B10 based ROM files and then add the kernel later? I am thinking I should start with the Kernel first?

There are rooted and deodexed versions of b08c and b10 on here. If you use b08c just remember to change the fingerprint in build.prop to match b10. That will prevent the b10 update from downloading. Once you pick a base I would recommend adding the kernel "boot.img" at that time.

Roger that. Check. I am now in the stage of setting options in Kitchen. Not sure exactly what I will need to do with the apps stage. Should I go onto themes before dealing with the apps or would it be ok to move on after setting options?

Just answered! :D I can check my messages off and on here while I'm working today if you need anything.

Thanks! I am taking a quick break........will be back on this a little later today. Really appreciate the help so far. Things are moving forward and I think it is safe to say, that when this ROM is completed it will have a cool bonus coming with it. :D
