Root Bought a used Nexus 9 that I can't reset.

Android Question

I got a used nexus 9 that the person did not factory reset. It turns out that they actually rooted it with something called dirty unicorn. I entered the boot up menu and choose factory reset, but it flashed up failed, and had unsuccessfully been trying to boot up with the dirty unicorn start up for the past 20 minutes. Help.

If it has a custom ROM (which is what Dirty Unicorns is) then it probably has a custom recovery too, which would be the easiest way of resetting.

To get into the recovery program you shut the device down (pressing and holding the power button should do this), then reboot it while pressing and holding some button combination. This depends on the device, but you can find instructions for the Nexus 9 here. You probably have a different recovery program from the one described there, so follow those instructions until you get into recovery, then look for an option to wipe or reset the device. However, note that all this does is erase user-installed apps and data; it will not restore the original system software (ROM).

To get rid of Dirty Unicorns you'll need to reflash the device with stock software. Because I don't own one I don't know how to do it (this stuff is always device-specific), so I'll move this thread to our Nexus 9 rooting forum. The people there should be able to advise you on how to do this.

Thank you so much.

I've never done this with a Nexus, but this page has a list of factory images and flashing instructions for different Nexus devices. I would expect that this would let you return completely to stock. Do make sure you use the right one for your device (either WiFi-only or LTE).

Hopefully someone who has done this will provide some advice.
