Help Bought a used Sensation 4G, has a few issues

Hi all,

I just joined this forum and people seem to be really nice and helpful here. I hope to be able to help too when I get a little more know-how on android phones.

I've had a few issues with my phone since I got it this January (2013).

It's a Sensation 4G with ICS 4.0.3 (It's a used phone, and it came with it already). I don't know if it's rooted or whatnot because I bought it used on eBay. Also, it came without a microSD card. I've since installed a 1GB microSD card that I had on my old phone, to use while my new 32GB card is still on the way here, so now I can take pictures and videos.

The #1 issue I have is:

On the home screen, I can't create an album (it has none currently). It says "Tap to set new album". So I tap it, and immediately it says "No photos or videos found" and forgets that I was trying to create an album and just leaves me there. tapping the menu button shows no menu.

When I take pictures, they are saved to a folder on my SD card. I know only because I installed Astro File Manager and can view the pictures this way, but I can't view any of them with the built-in album option.

I imagine its looking for albums in a directory that does not exist, but I do not know what that directory path is, nor do I know why it doesn't ask me to create it.

The music section is doing the exact same thing. It says "no music found. Tap to go to the music application". So I tap it and it immediately says "No music found" and doesn't let me tell it where to look for music, or do much else. Just like with the album feature, no menu pops up when I press the menu icon at the bottom of the phone.

The #2 Issue I have is:

Sometimes when I take a picture with flash, the phone shuts off. This doesn't always happen though. Could this be due to an aging battery? I imagine the flash draws a lot of power when it uses both leds.

If anyone has any idea on how I can fix my phone I'd love to hear it. Thank you in advance for any help!

So, anybody? No idea what these problems are? Is this a problem that's unheard of? If so does that mean there's nothing I can do?

Hiya PPG!
Welcome to AF!!
I saw your intro thread and decided to greet you here and take a look at your issues.
While I am not familiar with your device, I can try to offer some assistance:)

When you got your device and activated it, did you do a factory reset?

Hi Mikestony, Thank you! :)

When I got my device, it was not new. The previous owner had installed ICS 4.0.3 on it. When I received it, all I did was buy an unlock code (its a T-Mobile phone) and loaded my AT&T SIM card onto it, and began using it. But the issues with the gallery and music app were already there when I got it.

No, I did not reset anything on it before starting to use it. I vaguely remember seeing something in the settings that looks like a factory reset, should I back up my SD card and reset it somehow? It had no SD card when I bought it.

If I reset it, would it revert back to Android 2.3, or will it stay at 4.0.3? And will the phone lock itself back to T-Mobile if I do that? I just don't know what's the impact of a "factory reset". Don't know if it's simply going to wipe the SD card, or also make changes to the internal memory.

To dustwun77:

Thank you, I tried everything on that thread you linked, but it didn't work. I created the folders and restarted the phone, filled them with two sample images that I have, but still nothing changed. I'm completely unaware if the phone needs to "initialize" a new SD card by creating a series of folders that it needs to run properly, or what, although I don't remember it asking me anything when I inserted the current card.

Before you do that, try getting and installing the app QuickPic and see if it creates any albums for you.

Let us know, please.

I tried QuickPic as you suggested, it works great (way better than using Astro File Viewer! Thanks!!) however the phone's built-in album and music screens still do not want to work.

QuickPic has made my phone's quirks much more tolerable, however the phone's built-in functions are still broken. Is there something I should try next?

Glad that helped some. :)

There is still the option to back up the things you want to save and do a factory reset and see if it puts things right.

I am not sure what all it would affect either but I don't believe it would revert or lock itself back. I have no personal experience with that at all.
