Begrudgingly I come to find that 75% of the feature changes are actually more efficient. It is possible to get what you want, it just takes a little more work.
Well personally, I am an individualist that hates to be forced to conform to anyone else's idea of efficiency. I know exactly what I like and what I don't like.
For instance, I hate the ribbon interface that Microsoft came out with for Office. I hated it 7 years ago when they came out with it and I still hate it today. Because of this I am still using and old copy of Office 2000 because I refuse to upgrade to that crappy ribbon interface. Now most people will say that the ribbon interface is more efficient. I say BULL CORN!
I know a good thing when I see it. I stayed with Windows 98SE all the way through Windows Me, 2000, XP, and XP SP1. When XP SP2 came out, I finally upgraded because it was finally a good and stable operating system. I skipped Vista altogether. But immediately saw that Windows 7 was a great operating system and upgraded to it. You could not drag me to upgrade to windows 8 with a team of Clydesdale horses! It has got to be the dumbest move MS has ever made (well, expect for Win ME).
My point is, just because something is new or popular does not mean it is better. I am not fooled by flashy ads and hype. The truth us, there is almost nothing new about the current smart phone technology. Heck, I had just about everything a modern smartphone can do over 12 years ago before Steve Jobs ever imagined the iPhone. It was called, the Palm TX PDA. It had wifi, bluetooth, Infrared, touch screen, expandable storage via SD card, an App store etc, etc. It had an attachment that allowed a GPS to be used with to turn it into a navigation device as well. It did not have a phone or camera was about all it lacked, but you could use it as an address book and phone dialer for your phone via bluetooth. And I can tell you this, it was a heck of a lot more stable then any android phone I have every owned. I wish to goodness that Palm would have won the smartphone OS platform war instead of google. The ONLY reason google won was because of their control of the advertising market, not because they were better then Palm.
Just because something is popular does not mean it is better (or new) either. One day they will come out with smartphones that are powered by ambient light and that never need charging. The technology industry will hail it as the newest latest technology and people will wet themselves with the glee of the excitement to own such a marvel of innovation; totally forgetting that we had light powered hand held digital calculators OVER 40 YEARS AGO!
I know what is good and what is efficient to me. I am not a crowd follower and do not like to be forced to accept something just because someone else thinks it is better.
Maybe I am late to the game on the subject of the little red badges. Maybe it's a subject that people think is old hat and they have moved on to "Newer and Better" things. I am an old guy with a good memory and it will be me that decides what is actually "New" and "Better". At least for myself, that is.
