Camera tips/tricks?

RazrHD132

Newbie
Well I must admit i have been lusting over the new Nokia 1020 since it came out, and have even changed my email over to outlook (which i actually prefer as opposed to gmail) in anticipation of buying a windows phone, but I don't think I would be happy with no removable storage, not to mention the lack of apps (and slow app release speed) that windows phone unfortunately brings.
That aside, the camera on the Nokia IS a big deal (if you care to carry around a 41mp lense in your pocket). I am aware my phone will never get as good shots as the Nokia (simply because the optics are not nearly as good of quality). That being said, my Motorola RAZR HD is pretty decent, and i try to use it a lot and experiment with the settings to get the best shots possible.

The new nexus 5 has HDR+, and with my phone being stuck in the stone age (at least until this supposed kit kat release comes out), I have the regular HDR mode.
I enjoy some of the pictures the HDR mode produces, but some are not as great.

Aside from the regular tips of cleaning your lense before using the camera (obviously) and adjusting exposure and flash according to the shots, do you guys have any good tips on using the camera on the RAZR HD or RAZR MAXX HD?

I will try to attach some pics i shot with my camera.

1. Before you snap the shot, always tap the screen to cause the camera to pre-focus on the area you want to have in focus. The dot with the box around it is the area that is being focused on. If it is white it means the camera is not focused properly. If it is green it is in focus.

2. Make use of the exposure setting in mid to low light situations. I frequently bump it up to 0.5 or even 0.7. It's easily accessible. Experiment to find out what works for you so you will know what to do when you have shots you want to keep.

3. Assign the volume rocker to be the shutter release (you can do this in camera Settings) This will allow you to use both hands to hold the camera when taking a picture rather than holding with one hand and tapping the on-screen shutter with the other hand. Since this camera's software does not utilize the hardware's image stabilization (please, Motorola get on this!) sometimes you get blurry shots. With the shutter assigned to the volume rocker I hold the camera in my right hand with my right index finger depressing and holding the volume rocker. Then I use my left hand index finger to tap on the screen to pre-focus. Then I use my left hand to hold the camera and slowly ease off the volume rocker with my finger to take the shot. This really helps to eliminate camera shake.

4. Use multi-shot mode to take a quick sequence of shots. Later, you can find that one perfect shot out of the sequence to keep.

I've tried third party camera apps from Google Play, Camera FV-5, Camera ZoomFX, but I've always reverted to the stock camera app.

BTW, nice kitchen. Is that St. Ceceila granite countertops and maple cabinets? That's what we did in our kitchen remodel last year.

I will definitely have to try assigning the volume rocker to the shutter button and using multi-shot mode. Don't know why i never thought of that before!

As for the kitchen, the granite I am not sure of the brand/type as we got it installed a while ago. The cabinets are honey oak.

I will have to get my shots dialed in because i am heading to Europe for two weeks in May and it would be a shame to come back with less-than-pleasing shots (don't worry, I will bring a point and shoot too!)
Thanks for the input
