Root Can't make/restore stock backup

I have been having network problems for over a month (no voice or text - thanks VM) and I have been flashing back between cm7 and the stock ROM for troubleshooting purposes. I have Clock Work Mod 5.5.0.4 installed and when I make a backup of a stock ROM the file size is really small (100-200mb) and when I try to restore the backup it just boot loops. I pull the battery and try to restart and the same endless boot loop continues.

I have tried MTDEV-UNROOT, and the Bone Stock ROM. Both install and run fine, but I can't make a useable backup of either of them.

I am able to make backups of cm7 and restore with no problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think the issue is not that you can't make a good backup of stock ROM, it's that you can't restore it over cm7, due to ext 4 partitions.

To test, using one of your stock backups, that won't restore: first INSTALL a stock ROM, and then try to restore one of your stock backups over it.

If that works, then that's it. Try a different version of CWM. Maybe higher or lower version... Can't remember how I got around this... But that should get you on the right track.

Edit: may want to try formatting system before restoring a backed up stock ROM, also.
Sorry,
just trying to remember what all I did.

Try TWRP, you'll love it. Its in the All Things Root page. :)
I had the same problem. Thing is I never do backups because on every phone I've had, when restoring a ton of things break. So not worth it.

I'm currently using Twrp, and it has the same issues (or at least our only version does).

Restoring a Nandroid backup should not break anything, and is most definitely worth it!

Now, restoring system data or apps (using Titanium Backup, for example) across incompatible roms can indeed break things.
