Help Can't update or emergency recover

I have a Captivate batch 1007. I tried to update via Kies Mini this morning. I installed the drivers from Samsung to my XP computer and everything went fine there. When I attached the phone to the USB cable, my computer found everything and installed the drivers just fine. I enabled debug mode as per Samsung's instruction, and Kies downloaded the files perfectly fine.

When it came time to actually install the update, I get a message that the update can't be installed and to try removing and reinstalling the battery or an emergency recovery. The recovery option always results in getting the same message I just mentioned.

When I power up the phone, all I get if the (cell phone)...!...(PC) icon. If I hold down the volume buttons while reconnecting it to my computer, I get the little road sign of the android guy digging with a shovel and a message "Downloading...Do not turn of target!!!"

I've back up anything important to an external micro SD card.

Is there any way to get my phone functional again? Can I do anything myself or can I take my phone to the local AT&T store? Or do I have a really shiny paperweight?

For what it's worth, my phone was running 2.1.

The cell phone /pc/android digging is actually download mode.
Make sure you have your phone drivers on your computer. Download Odin one click, once Odin is running plug in your phone in download mode if comm port lights up... It sees your phone and you can flash. Google Odin one click for captivate stock.
