I have a completely stock N7 (2012) running newest release of KK (4.4.2)

If I buy a standard Chromcast dongle and stick in my TV HDMI socket can I mirror my tablet screen to it?

Yes / No ?

Hopefully I don't have to root just to do this and go for custom ROM stuff ? The option to cast video certainly appears on the tablet - anyone done this ?

You cannot cast the screen. You can cast YouTube and some other stuff. Rooting will make no difference.

I believe there are also now apps that let you cast local content (photos, videos, music) from your tablet. But as the previous post said, Chromecast is not designed to just "mirror" your tablet screen ... it's meant to let you control the broadcast of audio/video to your TV from your tablet (or phone or PC).

There is also an option to cast your Chrome browser screen from your PC ... although there's sometimes quality issue with this kind of connection.

Thanks for replies so far - so here is a scenario ...

Whilst watching www.filmon.co m http://www.filmon.com on the N7 using Chrome Browser. Can I cast that to my TV if it has the requisite Chromecast device installed in an HDMI socket ?

Possibly. To do it from an Android device rather than a PC you need to install Chrome Beta 34 or 35. It includes experimental support for casting embedded videos. I haven't tried it myself.
