Help Data enabled icon on status bar

Is there a way to add a "data enabled icon" to the status bar? I use WIFI and only turn on data once in a while since it's expensive. But -- I forget to turn it off. I'd like to have an icon show up when it is on. Thank you for your help.

I don't think you can do that unless you are rooted (control of the status bar icons--i.e., outside of the notification icons--is controlled by the operating system (Android)).

Your best bet might be a simple on-screen widget like this one:

(or something similar--although this dev has several other very good apps, one of which I've used often (Wifi Analyzer)).
