Help Do I need hangouts for SMS, or is Google Messenger enough?

I've read that Hangouts is required for sms functions on android wear watches.

But hangouts is a little too complicated for me...all I need is simple sms.

I noticed Google messenger is an android wear app (I can't try it out because my watch hasn't arrived yet)

Can I use Google Messenger for sms from the watch instead instead of hangouts?

I'm using Messenger and get notifications to the Moto 360 work just fine.
The stock Messages app on my Note 4 did not send notifications.

I uninstalled Hangouts because IMO it was trying to do too many things for one app. But that's just me. That said, Messenger is my app of choice for messaging, and it works great with my Huawei Watch.

Another Messenger user here. No issues with notifications at all. Give it a go, it's nice.
