Does the MHL need to be charged?

I have a Note 8.0 and love it. We watch alot of movies at home and I used to have an Ipad that hooked up with the hdmi cable and just mirrored the screen.

My phone is a GS4, and I bought the 2.0 MHL adapter (white one).

When using it with the GS4 i had no problems.

When I try using it with the note, it only works when it's also being charged.

My question: Is there a MHL adapter that will work with the note that doesn't need to be charging to work?

Hmmm...Have you tried the Samsung proprietary MHL adapter:
Amazon.com: Samsung Galaxy S3 S III / Samsung Galaxy Note 2 II MHL HDTV Universal Adapter - Retail Packaging: Cell Phones & Accessories

-EDIT-...Nevermind. I think that requires a microUSB charging cable. Only other thing I can think of is maybe the Allshare?

No. The reason why the S4 can do it is because it uses MHL 2.0. This allows the device to power the MHL connection on its own. To my knowledge, none of the Notes have this.
