I do a lot of switching between ROMs and somehow on my gmail contacts on my phone, I have many duplicates. I tried deleting the file in Data/Data to no avail.

What do I need to delete on my phone to do a clean sync with gmail contacts?

I'm not sure of the solution, but have you attempted to delete on your computer? Just go to your Gmail then Contacts and delete from there.

I had this problem. Go to your gmail account, click on Contacts>My Contacts. You'll see your phones contacts with your phone number @ vmobl.com the top. Click on More and in the dropdown menu, select Find and Merge Duplicates.

You may also need to hover over the contact categories on the left to expose "Other Contacts" at the bottom, where I had an additional 9200 duplicates for my wife. And, it can only process 2500 at a time, so if you have this situation, you may need to run the Find and Merge several times in succession.

Wish I knew how to make it not do this in the first place. Maybe there was a bug at one of my recent reinstalls....
