So a friend of mine and I are both going to university and he came up with a good way to save money; buy/download our textbooks through an ereader like Kindle. Then I got thinking, "I have an ereader on my phone, would that work?"

Thus bringing me to ask, do you think it'd be possible to find downloads of my textbooks on the web, and then view them in the reader on the HTC DHD? It would probably save us about 800-1000$ per year on books.

Maybe you will find some very old textbooks for free.
If so and they are .mobi format, you can put them in the folder 'kindle' on the SD card and read them with the Kindle app.
For other formats like .epub you will need an other eBook reader e.g. Aldiko.

If you look in the Google market, you'll see that there is an official, free, Kindle app. For academic books I imagine that would be the best way forward, especially as you can have the PC Kindle reader on your computer and any books you buy will automatically be accessible on both devices.

But, before you go to far with this, I'd suggest you try downloading a free book or two and make sure you are happy with the reading experience on your mobile phone. Personally, I have quite a few books on my phone, but I've not yet read one cover-to-cover because it really just doesn't compare with having a real book and always feels like hard work. And, of course, the battery will get caned because the screen will always be on. Real ebook readers use entirely different display technology and they do look like something I could live with... bigger screen, very long battery life, and they make the pages look close to a real book.

I've got Kobo eReader on my DHD right now because a friend referred it to me. I don't mind the look of reading on the screen, I have pretty good eyes, so it's no problem.
