Help email photo attachments do not open , moto x 2nd generation android 5.1

When I attempt to open email photo attachments get black screen with message "couldn't load photo"
Occurs with JPG and PNG files.
Moto x 2nd generation android version 5.1

There are lots of definitions for email. Are you referring to the Gmail or app or some other app?

Occurs with photo attachments for both my hotmail and gmail accounts.

Did you try sending yourself a Gmail with an attached image that you knew was good? Did it work?

I emailed photo from my phone to both my gmail and hotmail accounts. I was able to open the image on my gmail account but not on my hotmail account.
