Help Error with gingerbread ota.

SmallDL

Newbie
I had the OTA message on my phone 2 nights ago, I accepted the download and it looked like it was gonna download and I would soon have gingerbread. But then nothing, the bar stopped moving and said there was an error. I had to reboot my phone in order to clear that screen, after the reboot I thought maybe I would get the OTA message again. But I didn't. So what do I do next? Will it be pushed again? Wait till Sept? My G2 is stock running 2.2 , I have never rooted or flashed or whatever. My phone was plugged in, and had about a 50% charge. Could that be the reason for the error?

I would prefer to not have to go into a tmo store and have them use the SD card upgrade as I understand it, that does a factory reset and I would like to avoid that if I can. A factory reset is such a PITA.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance everyone!

Thank you. Is it fairly simple, and do I have to use a PC or can I do it directly from my phone? I did read somewhere, either here or the tmo forum about 2 different download files, one that is 2.3.3 and one that is 2.3.4. Does that matter? The only other android phone I had was the vibrant and the g1(very briefly it was used and only lasted a couple of months) and the vibrant you just had to use kies even though it was more trouble then it was worth.

I really love my g2 and would hate to brick it. Thanks again!

EDIT: I followed the link provided to the xda instructions to do the manual update. More digging and I found out why my original OTA was kicked back. I have clockworkmod on my phone. We bought this phone on Craigslist. and my husband asked if it was rooted, the Guy said no it has super user permission on it. I have no clue what that means, but he seemed happy with that. He doesn't care about the update, however I do, he doesn't have the time to research and do this for me. (He is a computer geek, I am a part time geek. Lol) and I would like to learn this stuff myself. Though now something that I thought was fairly simple is more complicated (for me a newb) . I am now overwhelmed with the amount of info .. can anyone just point me in the right direction? I found that on many of the more in-depth boards that deal with this, are usually not very kind to newbs (even though at some point everyone is a newb) .

Thanks again to all you guys out there!

first off super user comes from rooting.

second download the update and save it to the root of your memory card (not in any folders)

third: follow the first half of these instructions
http://androidforums.com/t-mobile-g2/371226-migrating-something-before-2-2-want-keep-your-apps.html

then after that is done. turn off your phone, hold down the volume down button and turn on your phone (while holding the volume down button) it will scan your memory card.

if its properly see's the update then it will ask if you want to update. click yes

then let it do its thing,

then download astro from the market and follow the second half of these intructions here

http://androidforums.com/t-mobile-g2/371226-migrating-something-before-2-2-want-keep-your-apps.html

and there ya go

Thanks guys! I knew I came to the right place! I will be trying this later, and will let you know how it goes.

Again thank you both for taking the time to help a newbie who's willing to learn!

one last thing before you do this, Download ROM manager free from the market, make sure you have the newest ver. of Clockworkmod recovery installed.
