External SD Card not mounting

beeson76

Newbie
My external SD Card is not mounting anymore. I have to manually mount it.

I am pretty sure in my case that it has something to do with the Internal SD Card. For some reason when the available space on the Internal SD Card reaches somewhere between 6.5 to 7 GB, the External SD Card starts having problems mounting.

I had my suspicions so I started completely new on this rom. The external SD Card worked fine...actually close to perfect as far as mounting, until the 7 to 6.5 GB mark. I noticed this on the other roms I tried too. The only thing I didnt do was go back to stock rom with everything factory. I am using Android Revolution 4.0 Rom.

I am S-ON. and I have 4ext installed.

Any help???

Thanks

Thanks xXchrizhurtyXx for the reply. Never thought to do that.

I just did and it looks like it still is not mounting. It was a very nice suggestion though.

Any other help or suggestions???

Thanks again for the replies xXchrizhurtyXx.

This problem really starts when I start moving apps to my internal SD Card. So I wonder is something gets corrupted on the Internal SD Card. Up to about 7.5 GB of free space, the Preparing SD Card pops up immediately after the Preparing Internal Storage Popup. Then after that its keeps getting slower and slower until between the 7 to 6.5 GB range it becomes very intermittant. Then it becomes to a point about 30% of the time I have to manually mount my External Card.

When you asked to mount the SD card in Recovery, do you mean the simple command of mount SD Card or should I mount in Recovery on the computer. I did both ways, and it seem to not affect anything.

Do you think it has something to do with my 4EXT being corrupted in some way. Or my bootloader. It has happened on three different roms so far. And if I would format my internal storage I think it will go back to the point of Preparing SD Card popping up immediately...or so I think it will because I did that in the past on a the different roms.

Also would there be some kind of script (which I read about on this forum) that could be written that would help solve this problem.

I know it it not a bad SD Card. It has been formatted numerous times in fat32. It works in other devices, and this has been the 3rd SD Card that it is happening to.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried formatting the Internal SD Card? Remember to back up any files you have in it.

This is where it gets weird:) I can format my Internal SD card to where I have about 10 gb free and the phone goes back to working perfect. The External SD Card starts mounting perfect etc. But then when I start adding stuff by way of moving apps to the Internal SD card, pictures etc.... When it gets to the 7 to 6.5 gb free mark, the external SD Card stops mounting automatically. But I don't think it's a bad Internal SD card because I can mount the External SD manually. And the Internal SD card mounts automatically and perfectly throughout the whole process. I think there is a glitch or some other thing that happens around the point.

Just curious, Do you have any games that take up a ginormous amount of space?

Also, use Storage Analzyer app and that can give you an idea of the space hogs. I have a feeling something is just taking up too much space and you can't "see" it. I have had space issues on my Toshiba Thrive and EVO and storage analyzer helped me find the culprit. I had the exact same issues you are having on my Thrive. It was Need For Speed and all the "hidden" files were just making my limited internal storage wonky. I had to delete it

Thanks Tube517.

I believe that was the problem. Used System Analyzer and that is a pretty nice program. I noticed that there was a program with a lot of data files that was slow loading when I first booted up. In my case it was a App. that had about 350 mb in over 35000 files. Deleted the app, but it still didnt work, I then started System Analyzer again and noticed that just because I deleted the main app, the files were still there loading, so I deleted the actually directory because it was still loading. After deleting the actual directory, the External SD card starting mounting, and it appears to be working fine.

So the solution to this problem for me, was that there was a big program with a lot of files that was taking a long time to load when the phone first booted up. Even deleting the App, didnt solve the problem, but deleting both the App and directory/files for the App solved the problem. When using System Analyzer, start it up and it will give a popup that says something to the effect of Please wait will this screen fills. Notice the Apps/directories that take a lot of space and take a long time to load. This will prolly be the culprit if this is the problem you are experiencing.

Thanks again for the help guys. This problem has been bugging me for 3 roms and about 2 months.

It was YouVersion Bible. Had no idea that that App was so big. The app itself was about 16 mb but all the downloads to it was about 350mb in 35000 files:) It took like close to 1 to 2 minutes for System Analyzer to finish reading all the files. In fact my phone feels real peppy right now. Seems to load things a lot faster.

I really do appreciate the help guys. This was the first forum that I got any useful answers from. The "other" forum didnt really provide any help at all.

Xda? Really haven't been on the amaze Xda forums lately. Been busy with my new toy (s4)

Hi,
Have been having this issue for ages. Would like some more info-
Storage Analyzer app by LEVELOKMENT?

Then I see Trimmble Outdoors has 29,700 files in 600MB and DCIM (oics etc) has 2.91GB in 595 files

How do I determine what is loading and what app could be the culprit?

You mentioned you saw one of your apps taking a long time to load- I am an stock ICS HTC Amaze4G- do I need to try and gather this info as well?

Tired of manually mounting my external SD.

Int shows 3.4GB free and ext is 5.45 free of 64GB card.

Thanks!
O

I have cleared off 7.5GB from phone and it still will not mount the external SD, only manually. I have to physically re-insert the card now because when I go to mount from OS it just shows "Reset?" and you cannot do anything there but back out. I deleted all hidden files off root of SD and checked it on a Win8 machine for file system errors (not sector scan though)

Really wish I could solve this. If I just used a 2GB card or something would be a non-issue- it would last a few months and when it stopped auto mounting I could just copy the card contents- format- copy contents back and it would begin mounting again. I have over 50GB so just too time consuming to do every time it stops working.

2GB cards tend to fail alot. I suggest you use at least a 16GB or more card.

So I fixed this issue on my HTC Amaze 4G! I spent a lot of time on it and finally it seems that when there are certain apps with tons of files it prevents the card from mounting.

I cleared off ALL apps from internal storage and put them on the phone. No effect.
I cleared all caches and deleted some apps and had over 8GB free on internal storage but external SD still would not mount.
I used a storage analyzer and that helped show some apps that contained a lot of files.
What finally led to my solution was using the Cleaning Tools in the excellent and worth every penny "FX File Explorer"
During the scanning process it would seemingly get stuck scanning certain folders.

My main 3 apps that caused this were Trimble Outdoors Navigator Pro, BackCountry Navigator Pro, and Torque ODBII automotive monitor.
I noticed the files were in a hidden directory that started with a dot like .trimble- some were not hidden.
I uninstalled the apps, deleted the folders, and the external SD began to mount again. ( I did not uninstall Torque just deleted the logs and turned off trip logging in the app)
I re-installed all of those apps and it continues to mount.
I noticed that Trimble no longer had all of my trips in it which is fine- they are there if I want to download them (logged in and all trips get synced to an online account)
BCN Pro I never use
Torque I use but I had it set to log every trip I made and it had a ton of logs.

I don't know why this works but it does.
If it stops mounting again I will report back- I am going to move apps off internal storage to phone storage and use the phone normally.

Hope this helps someone out there. Sure was getting to be a pain for me to pop the card in and out every time.

:)

Just an update- few weeks later and still mounting perfectly. Only 5.2GB free on main storage so it is clearly an issue with number of files in certain folders. I have also realized how much time and frustration this issue caused me now that it is fixed!
whew.

O
