Help G2 VS980 - recovered from soft brick; how to get 5.0.2?

Newbie
I bought a G2 VS980 (Verizon) which came with Lollipop 5.0.2. I tried to root the phone using this method - http://highonandroid.com/android-smartphones/how-to-root-lg-g-flex-2-g2-g3-on-lollipop/. After step 12, the phone needed to be rebooted, and it was stuck on the LG screen with green & blue LED cycling.

I was able to get into download mode, and got it back to stock using the KDZ method at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476 and VS98024A_11.kdz. That brought the phone to 4.4.2.

I was hoping that using Settings/System Update would get me to 5.0.2, but I receive an error message: Software download was unsuccessful.

I'd like to get the phone to 5.0.2 and root it. Can I use the LG flash tool to install VS98039A.kdz, which I got from http://storagecow.eu/index.php?dir=Xda/LG+G2/Stock/Verizon/Lollipop/?

After that, what is the most reliable root method?

Thank you.

If using the kdz method, be sure to select the "cse" flash method in the tool. If you used normal, it may explain why its not updating all the way.

I used the CSE flash and VS98024A_11.kdz.
Can I use the flash tool again, but with VS98039A.kdz? I'm a little gun-shy at this point about bricking the phone again.

It should have updated all the way with cse flash option. Not sure why the hangup on LP. Any kdz should have worked to OTA your way forward. CSE is total wipe, out of the box state so nothing should have imepded it.

Re: over the air update - it's a Verizon phone, but I don't have a Verizon account. That's why I'd like to flash 5.0.2 onto the phone. I'm just not sure if it's safe to try VS98039A.kdz.

Should be fine. I didn't know the 39a kdz was available, that's good news.

Hurray, it worked! I used the flash tool and the 39a kdz and all is well. There were a few tense moments after flashing was complete when the LG logo just sat there, but given a little time, the installation progressed. The phone is now at 5.0.2.

Thanks to both of your for your encouragement.

So now that I'm back to square one, I need to decide if I'm brave enough to try rooting again. If so, is there a pretty solid technique?
