I mated my GNEX with a bluetooth mouse and a bluetooth iPad keyboard. I then plugged it in to a HDMI monitor.
It was cool to see the mouse cursor but this is definitely NOT a desktop replacement.
Here are the results

Here is the iPad doing the same thing.

Summary.
HDMI on the GNEX sucks. You need power to the MHL cable.
Inconsistent results. Some monitors only showed in 480p.
My TV displayed in 720p 1/2 of the time.
Netflix is horrible on the GNEX. Surfing the web in 480p is horrendous.
On the iPad. the cable requires no power. I can watch 4-5 movies streaming from Netflix.
The con is the mirror desktop is not full screen. It is scaled to 1024x768 on the iPad2. I will get an iPad 3 and see how that goes. However, it was very crystal clear sharp. I can read web pages like craigslist and read PDFs very sharply whereas the GNEX was very blurry.
Video playback on the iPad was gorgeous. I had some 1080p video streamed from my laptop into the iPad feeding into my monitor and TV.
