Google makes accommodations for the deaf and hard of hearing communities, whereas Netflix and Blockbuster have left us behind.
The new price model adopted by Netflix requires that users pay twice for closed caption capability. Users are required to sign up for the streaming service and then pay for the DVD by mail program if they want closed caption capability - Netflix's streaming service doesn't offer closed caption capabilities. Blockbuster doesn't offer closed caption capability in their streaming service either and neither company was able to provide a time line of compliance.
Closed captioning: the process of displaying text on a television, video screen or other visual display to provide additional or interpretive information to individuals who wish to access it. Closed captions, similar to subtitles, typically show a transcription of the audio portion of a program as it occurs (either verbatim or in edited form), sometimes including non-speech elements.
Google, however, is working to provide closed captions in the movies offered in the Android market. I recently emailed the android market team to inquire about closed captioned movies and received this email in response:
"Hi Ian,
Thanks for writing in today, Currently, closed captioning is available on
a limited number of movies. Accessibility of our products is extremely
important at Google, so we're working hard to expand our closed captioning
offerings, and make it easier to search for them on Android Market.
In the meantime, here's a list of the movies that have closed captioning.
Note that movie availability is subject to change at any time.
