Withalligators
Lurker
Hey guys,
Brand new to the Android world. I've had a iphone 4 that I found with a cracked screen and repaired for a couple of years now, but that's it. I just picked up the D801 off eBay for 140, which seemed like a good deal. I got one, and the GPS worked once, then never again. I got a second one, and the GPS is so-so. I really need quick GPS for work (I'm a biologist and would like to continue using apps to take field data with a GPS point as on my apple). So far, I like a lot about it, more than miss from the iphone.
I've updated to Lollipop, and the GPS was fairly worthless. 150 foot accuracy if it would ever get a fix. Rooted it so I could use FasterGPS and it made it worse. Never saw a satellite, let alone connect to one. Then, I started looking around to get the best settings to manually alter the gps.conf file. It's ok now. I can get a fix outside after it's using upwards of 8 or 9 satellites, but it takes forever, and sometimes it's using 15 satellites before it gets a fix. Under a forest canopy it takes even longer. Inside, forget it, usually. Also, if I'm driving, it will never get a fix, even if it using a whole bunch of satellites, unless i pull over for a few minutes. I've also opened up the back of the phone and shimmed up the contacts to the antenna. I was considering buying some conductive grease to improve the contact.
This is all disappointing considering I've used my crappy, failing iphone 4 to take waypoints and get directions from the amazon to the streets of Bangkok without a hitch.
I use the phone entirely over wifi, so no carrier, which wasn't a problem with my iphone. It would connect to a satellite instantly, and the directions were always impeccable if I got them with a wifi connection and cached the map before setting out. Even if I didn't do that, it would still pick up my location instantly.
So, here's my gps.conf file as it currently stands. Any suggestions would be much appreciated:
