After reading a post on a HTC handset I believe the latter is correct, but I want to make sure it is correct and not waste more time. I would've already done the reset but still waiting for a response on on previous post 
Unable to gain access to gmail account to retrieve contacts and new account doesn't show the contacts at all. Is any of the android backup viewable from the gmail account online from a desktop?
