Headphones vs Aux cord

When I try to plug my s3 into my car aux and when I do, it thinks I've plugged in headphones. When I had a Samsung Epic, I had an option to make the sound coming out 5.1 surround. I cant seem to find this option and my music sounds very odd. please help!
