Help choosing new phone

Hi all.

Sorry, I expect there are rather a lot of these questions here! But after 2 years (very happy 2 years with my Motorola Atrix) I'm now allowed an upgrade. This is the choice I have, all free for me so there's no cost implications.

My priorities are 1) battery life 2) performance (speed/memory) 3) reliability

Any advice really appreciated! Just trying to narrow it down to a few.

Sony Xperia Z1 LTE
Sony Xperia SP
Sony Xperia Z
Sony Xperia M

HTC One
HTC One Mini

Samsung Galaxy Note II LTE
Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini
Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE
Samsung Galaxy Fame

Battery life will be the Galaxy Note II probably.
Speed would go to the One most likely.
Reliability would go to the recent Sonys, HTC One, Note II, and S3.

The Z1 is sort of head and shoulders above the others IMO. In terms of raw specs alone. In raw hardware alone, only the Note 3 can stand up to it: Snap 800 (quad) 2.2Ghz and an Adreno 330 with 2GB of RAM is no joke. Note 3 is going at a Snap 800 (quad) 2.3Ghz Adreno 330 and 3GB RAM.

Those going to eat the other choices for breakfast.

As for the rest, you do have a very wide range. The Galaxy Fame and Xperia M are very low range and can't even compare to the others. Do you have a budget? I mean your choices range from a $200 phone in the Galaxy Fame to a $700+ device in the Z1

Having looked at the contract details again, I'm not sure the Z1 is available to me yet - or at least, I think I'd have to pay more to get it.

The Xperia SP looks good though, I may look closer at that - does it lack anything obvious?

Not really. With regard to your stated requirements, the 'Stamina Mode' in the latest Xperias can really eke out the battery life if your phone spends a lot of time idle. Performance is nice and smooth; the dual-core Qualcomm is plenty powerful and Sony's 'Xperia Home' launcher is light on resources. Reliability is more difficult as it's still relatively new, but I've personally seen none returned with faults.

More important is what it offers over some of your other choices - 4G. As you'll be using it for (presumably) the next two years that's an important element of future-proofing.

After some googling and analysis, it's got to be the HTC One really, hasn't it? Looks fantastic.

Sort of. It looks fantastic, and the only phones capable of matching up to its performance that are currently available are the other flagships (Xperia Z, S4, Note2), as the Z1 and Note 3 isn't available yet. I'm not sold on the camera though, as most of stuff I take pictures with are textbook pages, handouts and similar stuff with text. I need more resolved detail which it's camera can't provide. So it would depend on your uses.

Just be sure that the memory is enough for your purposes. It's not expandable, so you can't get an SD card for it.
