Help HELP-phone wont install non market app

MOGuy2010

Lurker
I am trying to install an app from a website that has an android app. When I try to install it from the my files-downloads folder in my phone it gives me an error that says "For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market."

Anyone know how to fix this or get around this by chance?

I'm trying to download it without having to get any programs on my computer. I wanted to know if there is a way around this on the device itself.

No. You either have to download and install the SWM on your PC in order to sideload it without making changes to your phone, or you have to download, install and use the other utility once to make the one-time change to your phone (which needs to be rooted) at which point you no longer need to use your PC to sideload.

One way or another, you need to use a program you install on your PC.

Rooting my phone is basically like jail breaking the captivate right? Kinda means the same thing?

Sort of, in concept (full, unfettered access)... but worth mentioning that an unrooted Android phone is many, many times more-capable than a jailbroken iPhone. Don't assume you have to root an Android phone just to get the same capabilities you had before.

what risks do you take with a rooted captivate?
