One name I always got a kick out of, here in central Arizona, was an old western spread named 'Skull Valley Cemetery.'

A few years ago, I shared that opinion at a nearby dinner party and another guest said, "I just buried my mother there." So it wasn't so funny after all.

I remember when this brand chili mix was actually called Bear Creek "Damn Good" Chili Mix.

I actually tried some of it and I can tell you it isn't.

typical UK-to-USA translation. one country's normal language is another country's vulgar slang

I recall back in school, a teach told me that during the World Wars, American troops were given a book on phrases that should not be used in the UK because they have a totally different meaning in the two countries.

Original definition of '******' was a bundle of sticks. At least, according to Webster's Dictionary.

Apparently the forum censor doesn't agree though.

That's very true... one of my favourites is the phrase "I'm rolling a ***", in the United Kingdom it means your making a cigarette. But in the United States.....NSFW

Note it's asterisked...***
I'm a British person trying to post something and the United States censoring stopped me writing it, assuming I'm using vulgar slang or something politically incorrect.

F A G ... in British English is slang for a cigarette.

And in England they call their cAt *****.. :/. Imagine my neighbors..(. Although a minion.. And took it just wayyyy to far...) when I called for my cats!! P word where are you??? Has anyone seen my p word??? It was a running joke on my street:)

Yes but you must understand that that word is a very derogatory and hurtful word here!! I could site some equivalents .. But ... I won't.. I wouldn't...
It's not censorship...
It's common decency :)

Btw the rabbit died:() :)
:(

Whoops!!! Hahahaha wrong thread!!

:D

Well sometimes I get confused between censorship and common decency and vulgar nouns these days. PC is not my strong point. :) English changes all the time and with being International, I guess one has to be more careful with what one says.

If a student asks me what I like to eat, I'll tell them in my own words.

I always find that the proper and PC reply to anything and everything is.."this" so for example when anyone asks you what you like to eat...you simply say.."this"! It works for just about anything!!!!:D:D:D

Interested to know if fanny is picked up cos it's got two meanings too.....though I suppose both essentially are the same thing, just one meaning in the front the other back.....

Pants though is one I used to find hilarious and confusing when I was younger.....

Oh and my first word which hasn't been picked up is used as a derogatory word, at least in Scotland!

Another forum online had a censor which changed 'Bozo' to 'clown' for no apparent reason. Most use the term 'Bozo' as a synonym for imbecile. Idiot. Fool.

Another would censor the UK slang 'Bloody' and the AU slang 'bugger'

Oh, it doesn't end there. iPhones still refuse to learn the word 'Hell' it will always change it to 'He'll' other less typable words get changed to 'Duck' and 'Shot', respectively.

AOL was infamous for its censoring. If you came from Middlesex, Essex or Sussex. You couldn't write your county, or it would be asterisked out.

The prodigy service was worse, it would literally ban you from an online 'message board' (old term for forum) if you said a word in the 'bad list'. I remember being banned from a wildlife forum for merely saying 'Beaver'

Keeping on-topic, surprised this oxymoron wasn't mentioned yet:

Microsoft 'Works'

A lot of Canadians must have been banned. :-)

Some forums or message boards might not be able to post something like "chink in one's armor"...Oh no we can't have that, that five letter "c" word is pejorative and racist....and rather close to home as well.

Here's another trademark that could trigger the asterisks, banning, etc.

There's a later Polaroid camera called "Super Swinger", and there was another one called "Square Shooter", which we had in early 70s.

In fact if one searches "Polaroid Swinger" on Bing China, you get this...
"您所在的国家或地区要求使用严格的必应 Bing 安全搜索设置,该设置将过滤掉与成人内容相关的搜索结果。"

Which means..."Your country or region requires a strict Bing SafeSearch setting, which will filter out adult content with relevant search results." ...however it has no problem searching for the British meat product beginning with "f" I posted about earlier.

I see that "swinger" is OK with AF's censoring though, as is "beaver" and "chink"... LOL

I believe S****horpe was an issue too.....lol

As can clearly be seen, it still is an issue with some! :-(
