How can I retrieve existing/old text messages and existing emails, not just new ones?

Android Auto works well EXCEPT trying to retrieve existing texts & emails. If I am connected via Bluetooth only, I can retrieve them, getting a list of all of them. I've done all of the setup that I'm aware of on my phone and car.

And that's why I do not use android auto.
Still too many bugs.
