I have all my icons hidden and organised with Fences by Stardock. I then use Rainmeter + Onmino (I can never spell it right so that might be wrong as well) so show tiles for my most commonly used apps.

A lot of people use Rocketdock, but I could never be bothered to customise it enough to not annoy me.

Have a look here for more inspiration!

edit: I assumed you meant for a computer. For my phone I just have my most used apps on the homescreen, and my music widgets on the one to the right.

I generally keep the icons and widgets I use most often in the centre (primary) home screen. The icons I use most often in each home screen are placed in the part of the screen that is easiest to press. This is usually the centre part of the home screen and then the right side (as I usually hold my phone with my right hand and use my right thumb to press an icon). Icons that I may use while driving (like Waze) I keep on the left side as it is closes to me while driving. I mount my phone on the vent to the right of me.

Assuming you mean phones rather than computers:

I keep my key apps in a set of folder organizer folder shortcuts in a rotating dock. To be precise, one panel of the dock has some key apps (dialer, calendar, sms, email) plus an app drawer, the other 2 have thematic folders. I use folder organizer rather than the launcher's native folders because I can change launchers without having to set up the folders again (and customise the folder icons myself).

I don't keep app launchers on my desktops at all, just widgets (actually that bit is the same with computers: I don't keep apps or documents on the desktop).
