How smooth is it?

I'm currently using a Nexus 4 and loving the speed and smoothness.

My mom is having me look for a new phone for her(she's on an el cheapo Galaxy Proclaim on Straight Talk) as my parents are switching from ST to Consumer Cellular(another AT&T MVNO). The Galaxy Nexus can be had in her price range. I love the Nexus experience, and her main complaint with her current phone is how slow and unresponsive it is. Will she be happy with the GNex? I haven't ever handled one, and I expect it would be a little slower than the N4.

It will still be fairly responsive, but won't be as fluid as newer phones. The biggest difference you'll notice is in battery life because the TI OMAP processor they used in it isn't exactly the most power efficient.

Thanks. She mostly uses the phone for some web browsing, Facebook, and a few games(like Candy Crush). Battery life shouldn't be too big of an issue. She works from home, doesn't leave often, and is never far from a charger(I personally think she likes leaving her phone on the charger so she can forget about it).

She'll likely be more than happy with the GNex compared to what she's used to. I never had any problems with mine, and it's still running fine with the person using it. Plus, you get the better camera, and not sure if the proclaim was ever updated, whereas the GNex is probably running 4.2 out of the box for her at this point? (I dunno what version was last, I rooted a long time back so was always on whatever they had lol). I can't think she'll be disappointed at all.

The Proclaim was stuck on 2.3. Even if Samsung released an update, Straight Talk blocks all updates on their phones(their SII is stuck on 2.3). The eBay ad says it has 4.0, but I know it could be updated to 4.3 easily. I expect that the GNex will get KitKat as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it had 4.1 or 4.2 out of the box. When I bought my Captivate back in the day, it was advertised with 2.1, but came with 2.3.

GSM Gnex is on 4.3 currently, just make sure you get her the GT-9250 and not the either of the CDMA version.

i love my gnex. battery isn't the best, and it did tend to become a bit laggy over time. but, the latest update to 4.3 has added new life to the old girl.

agree, go with a gsm version. i have a cdma sprint, and i never got the ota update to 4.3. so i had to take the perilous (for me) step of rooting, installing a custom recovery, and flashing a custom ROM based on 4.3. Took me awhile, but i'm very glad i did it. it is definately more responsive now.

Well, to my consternation....she didn't see what the big difference is between a Nexus or an iPhone....and bought her neighbor's used iPhone 4 for the same $200 she could have paid for a GNex. Looks like I'm going to be teaching her how to use iOS 7.

Well, you did the best you could....My condolences.

From what I've heard, older iPhones are having issues performance wise with iOS 7. Not that it shocks me. Its a good 3 models behind.

Yup, I told her that the GNex was more than a year newer than the iPhone 4, and had many significant advantages....oh well....at least she already has her music organized in iTunes, so it shouldn't be TOO bad of a nightmare setting her up.

I wonder if she'll be able to use iMessage with my dad(he's using a 1st gen iPhone on iOS 3 :smokingsomb: )
