Disable all data connections on your G1:
1. Use Anycut to create a shortcut to "Testing"
2. Click on Testing.
3. Click on Phone Information
4. Hit Menu button
5. Click on More
6. Click on Disable data connection

This turns off all data access. Note that GPRS service switches to "disconnected".
Now you should have a phone that does voice calls, but no data access

I dont seem to get it ... Is there someone who can give more detail step-by-step instructions for the handicapped ?

Do:
1.) Start at home screen (or screen you want the shortcut on)
2.) longpress the desktop
3.) Click Shortcuts
4.) Click shortcut App Anycut
5.) Select one of the following (Direct Call, Direct Text Message, or Make your Own)

etc..... please forgive me for just not getting this ???

I've not read the whole thread, just to let you know there's an app called Toggle Settings on the market (free) which you can use to set off auto-sync.

No worries :)

1. Start anycut (I start it from the main android menu)
2. press "New shortcut"
3. Press "Activity"
4. Scroll down until you see "Testing"
5. Press "Testing"

The testing shortcut will appear on your desktop

Thanks very much ... I was close but still too far ...

I renamed the shortcut to "StopData" so I will remember what it does..

Okay. just spoke to someone at T-Mobile and she said that all I had to do was uncheck the data roaming option and I would only be charged for the texts and calls that I made/received.. Actually incoming text messages are free and outgoing .35 and I wouldn't be charged for any data unless I checked the data roaming option again. Is this true or bs?

Ask for that in writing, and if you get charged you will have evidence to support yourself and deny all resonsibility.

edit: thats not legal advice

I'm about to go on an international trip.
I will follow both of the pieces of advice in this column:

First) Turn off the data connection:
2. Click on Testing.
3. Click on Phone Information
4. Hit Menu button
5. Click on More
6. Click on Disable data connection

There is also an option to turn off data on reboot. I observed, right here at home, that if you do that and reboot, the phone will turn data back on the first time it "needs" it. You have to go in and turn it off again.

Second) Turn off roaming (this is under Settings/Wireless Controls/Mobile Networks.

In addition, I will go to t-mobile.com each day and check to see if I'm getting charged anyway.

I'll let you all know how it works out!
