Help HTC Car App after 4.2.2 Upgrade

Cessquill

Hi

Has anybody had any success with the new Car Mode? I used to use it a lot until Google recently upgraded the maps. Now it no longer works as expected.

For example...
  • The Car app interface has had a big facelift - doesn't appear to do anything more, but looks different
  • When hitting the Navigation button you're taken to a new page that has a lot of options (although none of which seem to be connected to your history with Google Maps)
  • If you then click Maps, you're basically into the Maps software - not a car friendly way to enter your destination
  • Sort your route out and hit the "Home" button to go back to Car (to maybe play Music)
  • Hit "Nav" and you're back a the Nav menu - no quick shortcut back to your route
  • Hit the Google Maps icon, and you're back to the start of Google Maps - not into the route that is currently ongoing
  • Maps will then crash shortly afterwards

This is on my HTC One anyway, anybody else?

There are other issues as well, like exiting the car app does not seem to exit the apps that it's got running (so music or Tune In will still be playing).

At the moment Maps seems very good, but it just isn't integrated with a Car interface (and using it in landscape mode is a bit of a joke). A step back for me, since on long journeys it can no longer go through the vehicle's speakers (unless that's all I want to hear for 3 hours).

I must admit I don't use the Car mode, but I've had a look at it just to comment. I think the Navigation/Maps thing may be more to do with the way Google have removed the old Navigation App, and now all nav is done via Google Maps. Presumably this is why the Car mode works as it does....I agree not the most user friendly way but perhaps something to get used to.

As soon as I fired the App up it auto connected to my Car (Bluetooth was switched off before) and I fired up the Music App and it played through the speakers fine. There is now an 'auto-connect' bluetooth option in the settings menu, is that selected?

Beyond that, probably not a lot of use....but I would say the App works as I would expect, but maybe as in your experience not as well as it did.

Yes, I'd figured it was down more to the Google Maps update than HTC's. It's been like that since the Maps update, but I'd hoped that the HTC changes would improve it somehow.

Thanks for looking into it. I'm getting everything connecting fine, it's just the navigation that doesn't work (plan a route, back to the home screen, back to Nav and your route is lost - it then crashes).

I'll keep my eyes open for updates or alternatives. A little annoying, since it was one of the fanfares when they originally launched the handset and used it quite a lot.

quick note - the new jellybean / sense 5 software update has brought back the navigation icon - haven't had a chance to try yet as the update has only come through to my son's phone, not mine (thanks T-mobile :( )

That's interesting - I'd not noticed that (haven't quite got used to having the apps in a custom order yet!). Thank you.

You can order apps alphabetically in the app drawer if you want to, it's an option. I can confirm the navigation icon/app also came back on the ROM I am running, which is sense 5 and android 4.2.2.
