Help HTC One X cannot cope with loud Audio when recording...?

Good Afternoon :)

After having my HTC One X for a month or 2 now I recently just got back from Download Festival in the UK and realised that all the videos of bands I took were useless as it seems when it reaches a point it cuts the loud sounds and keeps the quiet ones so I lose all bass and guitars and get left with a snare drum and a few symbols...

I have tried looking through all the settings with no luck and it seems that most forums I have looked at dont seem to be having the same problems...

I have tried creating videos in normal environments and everything works fine... its only when I try and record something very loud like a gig or like when I went to Vegas and shot guns it didn't pick that up either, it just muffles the gun shot and all I hear is the shell hitting the floor...

Any ideas would be great

Cheers

Thanks El Presidente for your reply, I just find it abit weird... which makes me think that its just my phone thats doing it... Only does it to loud noises! Good work on seeing Stone Roses though lol

I need someone with a shotgun licence and a HTC One X to test to see what happens if you record a few shots... thinking about the advert for the One X hes sky Diving which using my phone would just be silent haha

Is it the same when you transfer the videos to your PC, or is it just on the phone?

I can't help you there, I don't know anyone with a shotgun license either :p

It's on the Phone and my PC and my Mac so im guessing its done at the recording stage not because the speak couldnt handle it...

Cannot seem to find anyone else with the same problem, there must be people that record loud stuff on here lol It's a lonely feeling haha

Someone posted on another forum for my problem and they its this...

It will be automatic gain control to stop the audio peaking at high levels.

Its applied at the time of recording so cant be adjusted afterwards (well you could run some post production work on it but you wont have a clean true signal to work with)

There may be an option to disable AGC or the use of a 3rd party recording tool might be able to help

HTC One X Android Phone Review

It mentions the AGC on that site and how its triggered by wind noise

hope this help

I have emailed HTC to see what they say but im guessing im kind of screwed if that is the case...

Well I finally heard from HTC and this is their reply...

Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC One X.

My name is Jonathan and I am a Technical Support Agent for the HTC Written Team.

I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with recording videos in loud environments.

I apologise but it is not possible to disable Automatic Gain Control whilst shooting videos in a loud environment. Unfortunately the HTC One X has not been designed to produce high quality video and sound when recording in loud environments.

Well Jonathan thanks very much!

I'm afraid not my friend...

im looking into getting a tiny external mic see wat that does for it...

I shall keep you all informed on what happens...

Enjoy your gig :)

Sorry to bump this, but I suppose it's better than starting my own topic on the EXACT same problem. :(

Since June, has anyone else experienced this? I also recently recorded a live band and it honestly sounds like the music is being played backwards because of how it keeps trying to lower the sound once it gets too high... It really, really ruins the sound and I simply can't use this footage to create youtube footage for the band.

I've looked at other audio software on the PC and generally use it frequently, but I've yet to find anything that tries to fix this issue... however, this is extremely challenging when it has already been recorded in such poor sound quality when AGC is active...

The video quality on the HTC One X, in my opinion, is absolutely brilliant on its highest HD setting... really does show the band playing... but the audio? Dear me... I'm quite heart broken to be honest, after spending so much on the phone. What frustrates me more is, I also took a video during the same event with my iPod touch 4th Gen and the Automatic Gain Control on that is... well, is pretty much spot on? I don't even know if it has one, haha... but the audio quality was SO much better than the HTC One X. For having such an excellent camera, you'd imagine, besides Beats Audio, that it would record sound to a high quality as well - Whilst it's perfectly fine for general use... (Which is what most people want anyway), it's a real let down on loud recordings, such as festivals, indoors with a band playing, so on.

I won't banter on, but as I said, has anyone else experienced this issue and if so, is there any fixes out there for this? It looks like I might have to end up recording sound on another device and then putting the HTC one X video ontop of it. It isn't too much editing work, but... yeah - I'd rather avoid doing this. No 3rd party application out there at all, yet? Or any other settings that need tweaking?

Hey Wolves and Welcome to the Forum :)

I'm afraid the email I got from HTC shows that they dont really care if we can record gigs etc... which if I would of known I would of probably got the S3....

Its a real shame but hey ho...

I have found no other apps or gadgets to get this working as of yet....

Hope someone else knows something I dont...

Cheers

I also had the same problem at a local gig I went to, the audio was just useless which is a shame because the video was excellent. I also videoed the gig with my video camera, the audio was perfect but the video was not so good as it wasn't full HD! I could merge the 2 together I guess but I really can't be bothered!

well...thank you for this thread...i mean...i have the same problems with my galaxy note and decided, that my next phone won't be a samsung...so htc was an option...now it isn't anymore... ;)

could it be anything to do with the background noise cancellation microphone? what happens if you block that off?

just a thought
