Help HTC Sync - Desire 2.2

I uninstalled HTC sync from my HTC Desire (android 2.2) as it would not sync to gmail.
Cannot find how to reinstal HTC Sync on the phone??
Tried downloading HTC Sync onto the pc but when I connect it cannot find the phone and the phone cannot find HTC Sync on the pc.

Where do I start.???

Are we are talking about an un-rooted phone here?

Do you actually use HTC sync? Personally I never did after initial set up. How did you uninstall it?

Gmail sync can be a little flaky sometimes. The first thing you should do is go into settings>applications>manage applications>all>gmail>clear data then clear cache. Next settings>accounts & sync>google(gmail account) & check that sync gmail is selected. Open the Gmail app, hopefully gmail is now syncing.
