Help HTC WildFire Screen Dead

Hi. Unplugged phone from PC and the screen is Dead. I need to get contacts and some other things from my phone since the Sim kept reporting "full" - now I know it was lying to me.

I've managed through the Vol and Power keys and perseverance to get the device "almost" attached using the USB. However, when I check ADB it continually tells me it is present but offline. I guess I need to get this into USB Debug mode - but with a dead and unresponsive screen I cannot do this through normal channels.

My question therefore, is How do I access and retrieve my contacts from the phone ???
