I called HTC about the battery charging issue

How do you guys know that you're not overcharging the battery?

Good Question. I was laying in bed with it right next to my face and i was actually wondering when it was going to explode and rip half my face off :)

How do you guys know that you're not overcharging the battery?
This is starting to get annoying. I use an external charger, do you think that over charges the battery? If so, don't read any further. If not, read on. When I use the external charger until it turns green and put the battery in the phone, I can plug in the charger to the phone and get no further charge. (stays green) If I leave the phone plugged in all night, take the battery out and then plug it into the external charger, I get a charge of about 15 - 20 minutes.
Point being here the phone will not fully charge the battery while it's on. Period. It's a safety feature.

There is a 100% noticeable difference.

When the phone is charged (while on) and the light turns green, when you take it off the charger you drop to about 93% in 5 minutes. Sometimes less if you are doing stuff.

While when letting it charge for another 30 minutes (when the phone is now powered off) the % decreases at a MUCH slower rate. Took about 20-30 minutes for me before dropping to 93%

Yes i have, and I almost tripled my battery life.

I know its hard to believe but it is the truth.

I do have a seido and a replacement phone coming so hopefully that fixes it.

i'm referring to an actual rundown test. meaning the amount of time for the phone to deplete the battery and turn itself off. personally i don't believe this charging method is adding anything of significance to the real world battery life. i could be wrong as i don't have the patience (or obsession :p) to actually test this.

the 1750mah slim extended battery from seidio gets me through through the day with a lot of battery life to spare. whereas with the 1300mah stock battery i would need to find a charger after about 14 hrs. i put my phone on the charger when i go to sleep and then i pick it up in the morning and go. one charge a day. only time i do a second charge during the day is if i might be going out for the evening.

also, for all we know this could be a design choice not to keep the battery topped off at all times. the charging circuit might top it off and then scale back until the battery reports a level at or below 90% full. then it starts charging again. i wouldn't see that as an issue.

I feel for you guys who are having battery problems, but I have absolutely not have had that problem. I have complained bitterly about the sound quality from the earpiece of my phone, which is a known defect on some units & I will be exchanging my phone because of this, but if my phone is fully charged when I go to bed, it only loses a couple of % overnight. And I have never shut my phone off to charge it, and it has been on continuously for the last two weeks except for a couple of reboots.

I am no fanboy and think there must be some issue with defective batteries or firmware/software/hardware issues.

Wracks me off, because I'm afraid my exchange will have some battery problem. My biggest fear in buying this phone was unacceptable battery life but this has not been a problem whatsover. Granted, I may not use my phone as much as some of you during the day, but my stock battery does not drain fast while in standby. I live in the city & am in a fairly strong signal area both at home and at work, so maybe that's significant as some have suggested.

While I do agree it does work to power the phone off and charge until green, I am convinced that its not worth charging for an extra 30 minutes just to get another 20-30 minutes of use. Thats a horrible yield if you really look at the time spent to achieve it. Its 10x easier just to grab my charger on the way out the door....

Don't get me wrong. I'm not in the camp thats specifically complaining about battery life of this phone. It doesn't last as long as my BB Pearl on a single charge, but thats to be expected when taking 8mega pixel images and having crazy living wall paper, in addition to the other things the phone does that I never bothered to do on the BB Pearl, like update the weather regularly.

However, I do easily see the light changes when charging that so many have talked about in here and I consider that to either be a confusing feature of the phone, or symptoms of a greater problem.

I am scared of getting a replacement to because i do not have the reboot or sound issues. Besides the little dust behind the screen and battery issue this phone has been darn near perfect.

I am scared that my replacement might have the reboot and sound quality issues that others are seeing and if i had to choose, i would pick sticking with having to go through the charging steps the deal with reboots and poor audio quality.

It is a new phone and I am sure any issues will get fixed soon enough

If i only saw a 30 minute increase in battery life i would not mess with it either.

I have to to the unplug thing 3 - 4 times and each charge lasts 18 minutes each, sometimes the 3rd or 4th time it ony takes about 3-4 minutes to complete the charge.

I see a dramatic increase when doing this. During the work week its not a huge deal because i have a usb charger at work but on the weekends i would like to make it past 2:00 in the afternoon without having to look for a charger.

Um yeah, I called that number and tried to get a new battery because mine is having the same issues and then some. After 5 transfers to different departments, they basically told me to F off.

I submitted a ticket online a week ago and it took 4 or 5 days to hear back from them.

I explained my situation and they sent me a canned response telling me how to shut off items gps, wirlesess, etc. and how to setup my e-mail.

Then they said if that doesn’t fix it see ya later.

I told them I had a droid with the same apps and same config and I had 2 to 3 times the battery life. The droid di have a slightly bigger battery but not that much bigger. 1300 vs 1400

Droid was oc'd to 900 as well.

I wasn’t expecting any replacement or any type of support from them i just wanted to let them know that there’s an issue.

I even linked the original forum with many other talking about the issue.

oh well, they have my data and they can do what they want with it. I am not trying to bash htc support because I realize VZ provides most of the support for the phones anyways and they do a pretty good job

In all likelihood your battery life would have continued to be extended with or without trying to circumvent the OS/SW controlling the charge. AN increase of 130% battery life cannot be attributed to an extras ~5% juice in a battery.

I'll be honest with you, I don't know what caused it. All I know is one day I was getting up at 7am, unplugging the phone, and by lunch time having it shut off because the battery dies. Then I read the "trick", decided I had nothing to lose and tried it. The next day (no additional changes to the phone, no settings turned off, no difference in usage or location) I unplugged it at 7am, and at 10pm I still had charge left. Similar results for several days. Today I didn't have time to do the "trick". At 2:30pm my phone died because the battery was dead. Now I'm not an electrical engineer, so I can't tell you why it happened, but it did. It makes no sense to me. As I said when I read the tip I thought it was ridiculous, and if I weren't experiencing the change I would not believe it myself. I don't know what it is, but as long as I can get through the day without the phone dying then I'm happy no matter what is causing it to "work". :) Seriously though, I hear what you are saying, and can't say I disagree with you. I can only report what I'm experiencing.

I just called HTC and they are not giving away new batteries, if you jump through all the hoops they will "exchange" your battery, meaning you will have to give your old one back.

Well, at least they have another report of the issue. Maybe they will at least start acknowledging that some people have issues and either look at fixing it or give us a good explanation on what is causing it.

It’s all we can do right now

I hope people don't start calling just to attempt to get a free battery even if they don't have the issue.

They did say that they were aware of the problem and that it should be fixed in VZW's next OTA update.

I agree with you 100%, I really hope people don't start calling in an attempt to get free stuff.

Instead of this alleged charging issue, we should be calling HTC to ask why they put such as tiny ass battery in the Incredible to begin with.

True. I don't do it either because I don't want to live with my phone off for any length of time but the method does work.

:D

Sounds like most of my customer service experiences via telephone.

+1. It happens both with the stock battery and my new Seidio 1750. And each battery also lasts much longer (not 3x for me) when I "top it off" with the phone powered down.

+1 for me also, i have the Seidio too, and both batteries acted the same.

1. charge phone all night with phone on, take off charger in the morning and would see a drop of 8-10% within 5 minutes, even without using the phone.

or

2. charge phone all night with phone on, wake up, turn phone off, leaving it plugged in, led would turn from green to orange with phone off and charge for maybe 20 minutes more then remove from charger and power on, and i noticed a much longer time before the phone would decrease to 90%

so for me this is proof enough.... and very obvious thats its not a "placebo" effect for me... just my $.02 / experience
