Help I'm confused - need a few things clearing up

Just got this phone about a week ago and have a few questions.

1. What's ROM stand for and what is it?

2. I've got a new ROM update from T-Mobile but when I run the install it says "This will wipe all your information and data". What's all that about?

3. Might be my router but when I enable WiFi and try to connect to it, it connects for a minute or so then disappears and then will come up shortly after saying "WiFi networks available" but it won't connect to the router.

4. Is it worth messing about with custom ROMs?

5. There's a battery issue, sometimes it will last ages and sometimes it won't last very long at all. I've heard Android keeps programs running after you've shut them down, so how do I close them properly?

1.Sorry i dont know what rom stands for but it is the way the phone works/sorts things out i think.

2.The new rom will wipe your phone back to the day you first turned it on, all apps and contacts, sms etc will be wiped but copy contacts to sim first etc then update (makes the phone much faster and few different features like touch screen to focus in pic mode etc)

3. Prob is the router or you are too far from router, mine does same with a netgear router. Menu, settings, wireless controls, wifi settings, router name, connect.

4. Not worth using custom roms as i will void warranty on phone

5.an app called 'task killer' is what you want

Cheers guys, thanks for the help. I upgraded the system and backed up, it was all good. But I have some new issues for the Android panel.

I've just bought a 16Gb Micro SD so my phone can double up as an MP3 player, can I just stick that in be ready or do I have to transfer stuff off the old one? Like files necessary to run the phone?

Also, there 7 windows where you can put various apps and widgets. Is there anyway to modify this number to say 3 or 5?

Thanks.

The SD card is used to store music, photos etc. Everything else, like the phone's software, apps etc, is stored on the phone's memory and can't be moved.

There are seven "Scenes" each one is divided into seven sections that you scroll through. Imagine them as sections of one single elongated desktop, if that makes sense. So no, you can't have 3 or 5, it's just designed like that.

ROM Stands for Read Only Memory which used to be the Chip that housed all the OS etc.

There were also chips that could be used as Erasable Programmable Read only Memory called EPROMs

ROM in todays terms are almost always EPROMs but the term has been lost so people just call it a ROM, but the fact that you can update it means it must be an EPROM.

In simple terms the ROM would be the OS.

OS is the operating system :)

There are many TLAs out there which people use daily but don't know what they mean so you're not alone.

BTW a TLA is a three letter acronymn. Also BTW means By the way. FYI

LOL

also I believe you can have 4 screens if you flash a standard Android ROM onto it.

But I wouldn't you'll soon fill those screens up.

For example home page with WI-FI on/off, 2g/3g networks, blue tooth, airplane mode, GPS, Messaging, gmail, big clock(digital one is better as it has weather)

Then a full page for calendar, a full page for stocks.

another page for extra things like Taskbar and Taskkiller, calc, to-do list etc.

May as well dedicate a whole page to music and another to photos.

That's 5 used up already and I've only had mine a few days. I'm sure you'll find a use for them.

ooh just remembered you can also set different profiles for work play etc so you can end up with multiple versions of the 7 pages depending on what you're doing at the time.

I really wouldn't be to upset about having more.

To save battery Taskkiller pro is essential and at 0.70 Euros an absolute steal
