Root [International] Removing Google Maps

I want to install an earlier version of Maps but understand I have to remove the version that came on the phone Moto G 16gb) (latest Maps and Kitkat)
I need to root the phone to do this? as I can only disable the app and not uninstall it.

Alan, Did you ever get an answer to this question? I want to do the same thing. I had a Samsung Galaxy S2 for 2 1/2 years. I thought the Navigation - 6.11.1 - was one of the best features of the phone. When Google updated it I was able to unintsall the update and revert to factory settings. I now have a Galaxy S4 Mini and I would love to get Maps 6.11.1 on the new phone. So far I've been stumped.
Thanks,
Dennis

Dennis, No, I never got to use the earlier version on my moto g.
I have version 8 installed which while OK, cannot be used like I used the earlier version and as a result I don't use it as much.
It is possible to save maps for offline use (which works OK) but they self delete after 30 days!
I tend to use CoPilot and have found it quite detailed
Hope the above helps!
