Is there a way to transfer dvds to the phone?

Yes, there is but you will need to convert them first... download a free converter like Format Factory make sure you convert it to H.264 and then just copy it to the phone.... depending on the size of the movie and this size of your card you should be able to get a few on there for sure....

I recommend using Handbrake. It is another free encoder that can convert a DVD or video files to different formats.
I recommend using the iPhone setting for best results:

I downloaded FF and did a convert to mp4 ... did not see H.264 or dont know what I am looking for .... can you help me out with a bit more info ... After the proper conversion and moving file to G1 what do you use for a Viewer ?

I use the 3gp for my movies select Rom Device\DVD\CD\ISO on the bottom left of the screen then select DVD to Video File... choose 3gp high quality output and size and it does the rest for you... if you are going from something already on your computer it is even easier... here's a screen shot for you so you can see what I'm talking about
