maps connection

Hi guys. Need a little bit of help. I used maps earlier for the first time for directions and when going into the app I go given the option of connection via wi fi or another option via gps or something. I clicked vow and now I constantly have the gps signal at the top even if i reboot my phone. How can I change the settings back? Seems to be using more battery?

Great thanks. Should I keep the WiFi one checked? Also whilst I'm on connection issues on mobile connection settings under wireless settings should the bottom box be checked? It says enable always on mobile d.... what is this?

If you've got WiFi checked it will constantly hunt for a connection if you're not connected to a known one. If you're not somewhere you'll remain connected (home or work for instance) a lot of people switch this off to save battery.

Always On Mobile is OTA networking (HSDPA, 3G, Edge, GPRS) which will be used if you've got no WiFi connection. This will eat both battery and any data allowance your contract tariff has but I think most people leave it on (as it's kinda the point of the Desire).

Sorry im a bit lost.
I have 2 widgets i have put on my home screen which are HTC ones too switch wifi on/off and too switch mobile internet on/off.
When i go into settings, location, there is a wifi box there saying use wireless netowrks and another box use gps satellites.
Im struggling too see what these are.

Also the enable always-on mobile d... says beneath it uses more power on some mobile networks.
Surely this isn't just an option too turn mobile on because theres a seperate option for that??

For quickest internet speeds what should i have on because for some reason since i fiddled with the settings as said on the maps my internet via mobile internet is taking minutes too load a simple page like google :S

Ah O.K. sorry - mislead you there. Always-on is a tweak within mobile network. Basically it means you remain connected to the mobile network all the time you're off WiFi. I leave it on - your mileage may vary.

Mobile Network is whether the phone connects over 3G/GPRS when you're not on WiFi.

The widgets are just short-cuts to the settings - you can set them in either place.

The Settings->Location->Use Wireless Networks setting allows the phone to calculate your position from the cell data (i.e. it triangulates from the strength of the signal from the mobile phone masts you're near). It's a good, cheap way to get your location. Not so battery-hungry as GPS but also not so accurate.

Internet speeds are, in order of fastest to slowest.

WiFi - up to 54Mb/s - data icon is a signal-strength meter.
HSDPA (also called 3.5G) - data icon is an H
3G - icon = 3G
EDGE - (also called 2.5G) - data icon is an E
GPRS - standard 2G data - icon is G

The bottom four are selected automatically by your phone based-on the cell you're in and your SIM card.

so what happens if i turn my mobile connection off via widget or wireless and connection settings?? but turn always-on on the other settings on??

I don't know off the top of my head. I would suspect nothing. You've got no mobile data connection so it can't be "always on". I don't think it over-rides the Mobile-Data enable.
