Help Music/sound file formats...

Scratching my head here. I rooted my HTC Desire GSM a couple of months ago, and moved up from Froyo with stock rom to OS version 2.3.7 with CyanogenMod 7.1.0.

Previously my phone had no trouble with .aac and .wma formats, however now it refuses to play either format through any app I have tried so far, although they play fine on my laptop when attached and reading files from my phone's SD card.

What gives? Did Google remove support for these file formats in subsequent OS releases?

Cyanogen has the android music player where as previously you will have used the HTC one. That may be the reason...

Google certainly haven't stripped any support.

Previous rom on Froyo played .acc files for notifications ok, and used MortPlayer (which I like very much for its standard folder views) for my mp3s and WMAs. I never actually used the HTC one previously.

On new OS/rom, I cannot play aac files as notifications (or play them back in any media players), and the three (free) music players I have tried (MortPlayer, Folder Player, Winamp) will also not play any of my WMAs on this OS version.

Something does not add up...

Well actually most 3rd party players (possibly with the exception of poweramp) use the built in support of the Rom which is compiled at source code level based on the default player, so whether you use it or not is irrelevant. Whatever the default player supports, 3rd party apps will support. Except poweramp which supports what it wants.

Ok so I trawled my NAS for a .wma and copied it to my sd card. Played it with poweramp fine.

Downloaded and installed mortplayer and it couldn't even see the file. Guessing that's because it has no native support.

So if you want to play proprietory files, I guess your choice is go back to a HTC sense Rom or buy poweramp (which is by far the best player anyway) although I don't like proprietory file formats so I have no aac to test so can't guarantee that will work.

Many thanks for the heads up on Poweramp. Just downloaded the trial version and it copes with the lot, with a nice folder view too.

As for my notification .aac files, they just came over from an old reliable Nokia. I'll just pass them through a convertor.

Once again, thanks for your time SU.

No problem. There are very few apps that I recommend buying but poweramp is definitely worth it.

Nothing comes close to sound quality or volume either. If you like audio, poweramp is a fantastic purchase.

And yeah, folder view is a massive bonus ;)
